Kess can read spell circles. Anyone who has sufficient knowledge of magic can, in this realm, as there are common symbols related to how the spells are put together. The spell is related to the elemental word for fire. The incantations roughly translate to "fireball" and "not a ball (anymore)", i.e. manifesting the fire into a ball and then releasing it, causing the aforementioned explosion.
