A Chobits Catastrophe
Emma T Capps onThis strip is taken a bit from real life or The Further Misadventures of my Father! After I had my wisdom teeth removed, my dad bought me some anime DVDs to distract me from my pain and swollen face. He knows I’m a huge fan of the manga group CLAMP (see my Halloween strip where Chapel dresses as Cardcaptor Sakura), and he knew I’d never seen Chobits, so he bought the DVDs. And my mom and I settled down for some Wholesome Family Anime Time.
Within five minutes of the first episode, the male protagonist, Hideki, talked a lot about porn. Then he discovered the female protagonist, a robot girl called a Chobit, naked and wrapped in weird bandages in the trash. That screenshot in the 3rd panel? Yeah, I had to edit that severely to make this comic G-rated. The Chobit robot came with no operating manual (how convenient. . .) so Hideki couldn’t figure out where the “on” switch was. He tried pushing various places. On her. Ewww! Yuck! I shielded my vision while my mom tried to skip over the inappropriate bits, but they made up most of the show, so we took out the DVD in disgust. My mom told me where her “on” switch was. Ack! Gag! We now have a household rule that my dad needs to check out the Amazon reviews or read the ratings before he blindly buys some borderline-pornography anime DVD.
We went back to watching the BBC’s “Lark Rise to Candleford” which is set in the early 1900s and is sweet and funny. Most of the houses have no electricity so there’s no worry about a switch anywhere.
