OK, now that you know the plot twist, let's talk about the most important piece of ST fanfic you've probably never read: "Visit to a Weird Planet" (Jean Lorrah and Willard F. Hunt, 1968). Appearing in the first Trek Fanzine, Spockanalia (#3), it told the story of how a transporter accident caused Kirk, Spock, and McCopy to switch places with Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley on the set of Star Trek. If that sounds like a familiar trope it's because it's been immitated countless times, including other fanfic ("Visit to a Weird Galaxy" - Star Wars; "Visit to a Weird Gate Address" - Stargate; "…Island" - Gilligan's Island… and so on) and in "pro" media, such as the episode of Supernatural ("The French Mistake") where the Winchester brothers swapped places with the actors playing them on the set of their show.
