There's a whole lot about Magellan that is made up on the spot, or at the very least made up a few pages in advance. When I started the story I knew that they'd ultiately prevail - but not how. Even the concept of Chang deflating the portal from within really only came together a few pages before this one. I suppose that speaks either to my laziness or to the organic nature of the story. I took the decision very seriously though, I had decided for quite some time that Chang would sacrifice himself I just hadn't worked out how until he and evil Chang ended up in the portal. It was quite a triumphant and traumatic moment for the characters, readers and myself. I don't take killing a character lightly and you can rest assured that Chang will get an appropriate send off in the following pages…
