The universe layers (explained last page) function as a system for 'processing' the cores in a circular fashion. They spend time in the waking world and gain increasing amounts of energy of either chaos or order. Depending on how much they gain of either one depends on where they will go after their shell expires or 'dies'. If a soul was greatly ordered, they are sent to Pugatory to become more chaotic, if they were greatly chaotic they are sent to the Dream world to become more ordered. Sounds weird, but this is how it works in the Shifters universe. When a soul is being 'processed' in one of the other Worlds, it is called 'dreaming' universally however, regardless of if it is Purgatory or the actual Dream world.
