I know people who are like this. But my philosophy is that telling someone they shouldn't be upset about something because someone else has it worse is like telling someone they can't be happy because someone else has it better.
I did used to get into this one-upmanship with a friend of mine and it got tiresome after a while and I just let him win from now on.
