This has less to do with Vader himself and how he is shown in the movies. The EU has shown Vader as being a bad ass. You play as Vader in the beginning of The Force Unleashed and you hunt down a Jedi and Vader is just bad ass. Other than Rogue One, the movies really don't show what the EU is showed. Outside of the comic and the end of Rogue One, we really don't see him being a bad ass. Especially not in the prequels. I feel dropping the EU really stripped that away.

Either way, that's Kylo's perception and not my perception. I still think Darth Vader is one of the best American villains (in that he's from American media).
