How Snakes Got Their Names 10
antcomics onAnd…the final installment in the "How Snakes Got Their Names" series!
The hognose snake is a real interesting species. There are several species in North America (Heterodon), and a whole other genus (Leioheterodon)of 'giant' hognoses that live in Madagascar. The Eastern Hognose of North America is quite the drama queen…if it's bugged by a predator/person/etc, it flattens its neck, hissing loudly and trying to scare off whatever's bothering it. If that doesn't work, it flops over on its back and plays dead. It gets its name from its upturned snout.
The rhino viper is an african species that's highly venomous. It has some of the longest fangs (up to an inch and a half long) of any venomous snake in the world. It's named for the 'horn' on its nose.
That contest is still on if you want to participate. It'll probably have to wait till after the holidays for me to get the winner's fanart donw, so you all will have time to do this (if you haven't already):
Submit to me the name of a snake (find the weirdest/funniest name of an actual species of snake that you can find, obviously one that I didn't already do here). The best submission (one I like best) wins, and I will draw your snake and give you credit and a plug for your comic. In addition, your character(s) from your comic will make a cameo appearance in a future Slippy & Alice strip! Whaddya say! Start Googlin' those snakes…well, when I'm done posting mine…
If you have time you might check out my newest 'comic' here at DD if you don't know about it. It's a repository of cartoons I have done in the past and current ones as well that aren't Slippy & Alice or Ants:
