A Puzzling Poser

Consider if you will, the following scenario.

I have made a longish stay with a friend who is old and looked after by a distant relative of hers, who acts as housekeeper-nurse-companion. I was ill while there, and she was most kind in looking after me, in addition to her ordinary duties. How am I to show gratitude for all her care of me?

Shall I:

A. Give her a handsome tip, as, although related to my hostess, she is also an employee?
B. Merely thank her warmly and give nothing?
C. Find out something she wants, buy it, and send it to her?
D. Do her some service, such as inviting her to stay with me when she has her holiday?

ANSWER: Not A - you can hardly tip your hostess's kinswoman, whether or not she is in a paid position. Not B - mere thanks, however warm, do not meet the case. C is much the best, provided the gift is handsome and well chosen. If you and she are congenial and have become real friends, you might also add D, but an invitation given purely as a mark of gratitude might not work out successfully and yet she might find it difficult to refuse.
