One inspiration for Seiko's character is Nausicaa. If you've never seen that movie (directed by Miyazaki), I strongly recommend it. Nausicaa is one of my top favorite characters of all times. She has a lot of compassion towards "foes" – or the people everyone else knows are the enemy. (If you've watched much of Miyazaki's movies, you'll know that protagonist/antagonist lines are pretty blurry by the end.)
