According to the Mayan calendar, the world will end in that year.
Also there was a feature on discovery channel that claimed the same thing. The consistency that 2012 is the end of the world. Different 'sources' were quoted in the show including The Book of Revelation in the bible, the Qi Ching, and even the so-called 'web bot'?
While the tabloids (often quoting nostradamus or inventing nostradamus words) and conspiracy sites like to talk about an ultimate nuclear war or a comet hitting the earth or an alien invasion, there are also more positive things said about 2012.
Such as a massive awakening of human consciousness. Some of these 'New Age' religions claim that the human race will ascend to a higher state of being. Some sort of a next step of evolution human race as a whole.
What is 2012 to you?
Is it just a big big hoax? Just like what these doomsayers like to say. Remember that y2k = end of the world thing?

Nah, the things about ancient Mayans is that they are ancient, as such, 2012 would have seemed like it would be the end of the world because at the time, it was really far away.
The way this kind of thing is going to pick up speed by that time, I'm idly wondering if the term 'self fulfilling prophecy' is going to be appropriate if something does happen.
I don't feel terribly concerned, even if something is going to happen. It's just all that much reason to live today.

I could go with the "severe change in human consciousness" theory. The Shadowrun-esque theory of magic coming back would be interesting too.
Or it could just be that that's when the poles swap, maybe some s'plosions and stuff.
From what I've heard, this year's supposed to be kind of "the beginning" of that, so it'll be interesting to watch.

If anything were going to happen, I wouldn't say it'd be a Tower-style murder-and-destruction change, but more of a Death-style rebirth, as stated previously. Of course if you go by prophecy the current pope should be biting it any year now, as according to the papal prophecies the next pope is the one who sees the 'end of the world'.
I don't care about doomsday. I live every day the best I can. I used to do way too much future thinking without enough living, but few deaths of friends who are younger than me and a couple very close calls of my own put a lot of stuff into proper perspective. Every time we reach a supposed "doomsday" without the end of the world coming to pass, people quickly scurry to find sources for the next closest date for the world to end. Does it really matter? Can you do anything about it? Can it be anything aside from another pointless waste of your time and energy to dwell on?
You could be reflecting on the whole "doomsday" issue in your car tomorrow and not see that truck swerve into your lane. After that, does it really matter when "the world" ends?
There's no point in worrying about when the world ends. It's going to happen some day and I have enough little nitpicky things I worry about, so I'm not going to worry about the end of the world. When 2012 gets here, we shall see what happens. Maybe thats when robots take over the world and put us in little pods, using us for energy, while we are trapped in a program made to look like our former society.

We've got enough of that anyway for global climate catastrophes, life ending meteor strikes, being fried by the gamma ray burst from exploding supernovas, nuclear winters, global pandemics… alien invasion? lol!

I thought that's what it was, too. I heard they believed it was the end of an era signified by climate changes and/or political upheaval, but not the end of the entire world.
you really can't use the bible for a date …True. It makes for terrible conversation over dinner. She'll get up and leave even before you've finished your main course.
Oh, and 2012 is the London Olympics, so it probably will be a bit like the end of the world here. Transport systems will grind to a halt (even more frequently than they do now) and there will be great distress as building contractors and organisers each blame each other for the fact that none of the construction work is quite finished.
