To celebrate my now-released paperback book, I am holding a Negligence fan art contest. The rules are simple:

1. It has to feature a character from Negligence (pretty obvious, really)

2. It can be made any way you like: computer art, hand-made drawing, sculpture, sprites (I guess), etc.

All submissions must be sent to me via PQ or my email address (darkstar13_2001@yahoo.com) by the last week of November.

The best ten will be featured on this page, which I created for this occasion.

The best three of those ten will be sent, no kidding, original life drawings I made.

Yes, the best three will be sent the original versions of these drawings. Think about it: you'll get publicity for your own comic plus a possibility of winning free art. What have you got to lose?

UPDATE: I'm now offering two more prizes for the very best artwork: a first edition copy of the book Negligence Origins (signed, of course), plus a poster sized version of your artwork.

"3. This is very important: no pornography. I do not want Chris Hansen telling me to have a seat."

Those don't count. The life drawing pictures are adults. The characters of Negligence are children. If the main characters were adults, I wouldn't even care if there was porn.

I love that you have a comic about children getting high off cough syrup, drinking mouthwash and thinking about suicide but NO, you are taking the MORAL HIGH GROUND when it comes to porn.

Okay, I changed the little rules thing at the top. The porn thing wasn't all that important anyway. Sheesh. I'm just trying to get involved with the community a bit, and I figured this would be a good way to do that.

Maybe I should just keep my big mouth shut.

Woah, Lefarce sure has rubbed off on you. I think the majority of fan-art contests tend to list 'no porn' when i comes to rules anyways, not always as a moral thing but just so that they can display it to all audiences and not see their characters getting boned. (his comic has some very mature themes i agree but i'll be damned if creepy childsex art isn't worse >.0 )

Thanks, Skullbie. I feel much better now. I thought for a minute I made an ass of myself on these forums.

I expected lefarce to jump in and troll but not Hippie Van. :|

elektro, since Photobucket doesn't approve of the life drawings, maybe you should just host the images as extra files in one of your comic accounts here?

You didn't, asking for your characters not to be sexualised is a perfectly normal thing, regardless of age.

Getting high of cough syrup sounds kinda like my thing, I might go read your comic now.

I wasn't trying to "troll" there. Elektro's comic offends me in quite a lot of ways, and that is what I was trying to get across.
Obviously someone requesting no porn in their contest is a reasonable thing, and child pornography is very very bad. What I was saying is that the things he has children doing in his comic are pretty awful too…at least, I definitely think they are.

I'll try to be more eloquent next time…apparently the second I get annoyed I turn into lefarce. That's pretty interesting.

Lefarce bullied me into it! D:

Ah seriously though, I wasn't trying to "troll" there. Elektro's comic offends me in quite a lot of ways, and that is what I was trying to get across.

These are very valid criticisms of the comic, I'll admit. Yes, what goes on in it are awful things. However, maybe I should explain why they are there.

Children, especially ones who are left to their own devices, will do stupid things. If given the opportunity, they will try to drink the stuff under the sink. This is why good parents would put locks on the drawers. However, as the comic's name implies, these kids are not raised by a good parent. They are raised by an awful one, and, sad to say, many children are in homes just like this one in real life. I am not making light of the situation, but sometimes the best way to cope with an awful situation is to throw some humor into said awful situation.

As for the "trying to commit suicide" thing, Drannik pretty much is going the same thing I am: a battle with his personal demons. Some of Negligence's stories are based on real events (not all, though). However, despite a lot of the hopelessness and despair felt by the characters, I feel that I do try to empower them and make them stronger characters in the end. After all, recently I had Drannik overpower the voice in his head to be evil, and the McKinley personality never returns.

I don't mean to sound pretentious or defensive. I admit there are somethings about the comic that do need improvement. But I feel I need to defend my comic in some form. To me, art is important, especially sequential art. That's all I have to say.

I'm with Elektro on this. I mean, in the film Butterfly Effect the kids there do absoloutly terrible and sadistic things (In the childhood scenes) yet it is allowed because it's trying to convey complex psycological profiles. I havn't read this comic, but I assume it's similar. Trying to show the cause and effect to a deep level.

p.s. I would enter, but I know nothing about the comic and my parents wouldn't really appreciate some nude artwork coming in the post since I'm only 16

No, it's not really the same thing.

The themes Negligence touches on are not that offensive, and if you find them offensive for whatever reason trolling is not the answer to your problem.

This thread is now about the negligence fan art contest… again.

Read it, and fair enough it's not. Anyway I don't find it offensive, just that it deserves the "Mature" rating.

The hell, I didnt even say anything besides "whatever, post it I dont care" and now I'm some kind of devious puppet master. Thanks for the credit, I guess?

Also I've never read the OP's comic so I didnt know it was about kids. I just thought there was some irony for a moment with what the prize is in contrast with the rules. MY BAD LOL~

Just wanted to let you know that the contest is still going on, although I have not received any submissions yet. If I don't receive anything before November begins, I may extend the deadline, but I'll think about it more when the time comes.

In the meantime, yes I really do have a book, and it is available on Amazon.com

The Negligence fan art contest will be ending in about eight days, so if you are still interested in submitting, do so soon. If I don't more submissions, I may end up extending the deadline.

The Negligence Fan Art Contest has come to a close, and since only two people submitted, there are two winners.

The grand prize winner was Roy Duncan of the Villain Next Door with his…interesting take on kids with video cameras:

And the runner-up was Subs of WGO with his simple, yet effective, portrayal of two of the kids:

Congrats to our winners. Because of the amount of submissions, the runner-up will receive two life drawing pictures.
