colleges, uniersitiesad and careers
I'm in the same boat as you - self-taught, mostly, with the exception of attending an art-focused school in upper-secondary (which taught me very little I couldn't learn on my own) - and I'm looking into applying for an art school - specifically for comic artists - next fall. :)
I go to Kaplan University online… for management.
I work at a military base… I plan on joining the air force.
I'm Associate Editor of www.JadoreMag.com
It's a hot lil magazine. :)
I'm unemployed and having no luck finding a job anywhere. My parents are paying my rent.
I have a B.S. in Zoology (minored in Chemistry, French, and Sociology; graduated Magna Cum Laude) and an M.A. in Biology. I really enjoyed both college and graduate school, but I've become rather disenchanted about it opening doors to careers.
Or maybe I can simply offer the advice of not majoring in Biology. It's a lot of fun (and hard work) that leads nowhere. (Keep in mind that I live in WV, which is apparently entirely vacant of any jobs that aren't blue collar/food service/retail.)
High School Graduate
Finished art foundations - college (meh this leads to nowhere)
Finished a couple semesters of digital media (flash, photoshop, basic animation)
I've taken up short courses here and there just to expand my knowledge. Mostly of the vocational nature:
- MS Office (word, excel, powerpoint, access)
- computer repair
- basic building maintenance (just a basic rundown of plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and drywall… enough to get me employed as a helper though. lol)
- automotive technology
- welding
But for my main source of $$$ I'm an office clerk.
I like the benefits, stability, and the people I work with. But I hate the job itself. lol Though on the other hand, I'm not scared of getting laid off. I am confident in finding a decent paying job in less than a week.
I double majored in English and visual studies (a fancy smancy way of saying studio art.) There's a part of me that always regretted not taking up OCAD's (an art school) acceptance…but if I had, I wouldn't have been able to get into teacher's college after graduation for the intermediate-senior division.
I'm currently teaching high school English and next semester I will be heading off to a different school to teach visual arts.
I actually dropped out of high school (yeah I'm a major failure in that respect haha)
went back and got my GED several months ago now I'm attending a community college. (GTCC)
I'm trying to transfer to the University of North Carolina which has a really good graphic design program so I've heard.
oh, hey people, its been awhile since I've been on. (cause I've been getting my life straight haha)
anywho, hello.

im a canadian artist and plan to attend a college in ontario (hopefully toronto) i have always actually wanted to go to ocad (if its the same school we're talke
ing about) but ive heard alot of ups and downs about the program there, ultimately though thats where i plan to go, most likely for graphic design or something along those lines
i took a ton of high school courses in art (drawing 1, 2, painting 2, cartooning, studio art AP) but honestly, i think high school art was pretty much a joke. i enjoyed being able to have time to practice my art during school time, but i can't say the institution or teacher really taught me anything.
i'm in college at Northern Illinois University where i'm studying to get a BFA in Illustration and I like art a lot more. so of the freshman foundation stuff was a bit slow, but i'm being challenged and i like it here. however i am still a strong supporter of being self taught (i learned most of my art and photoshop on my own) though i will say that school has given me some pointers and taught me things that i know i would not have been able to learn.

Yup it is the same school. :)
I also applied to York University's fine arts program and got into that. However I was dissatisfied with the interview process so I didn't take their acceptance. It worked out for me though since I ended up graduating with an Honours B.A. in English and Visual Studies.
It's been years since I've applied to universities so things may have changed a lot. However I do remember there being a portfolio day of some sort around the spring time. Schools from all over Ontario and parts of the United States usually come and you can get free advice about your portfolio. Why not check that out? I think Sheridan goes there too.
I took some drawing and design classes in high school and college(still there), and filled up a lot of sketchbooks during that time . I have very little direction right now in terms of what I want to do with my life. I wasn't accepted into a program I needed to get into, so I'm taking a semester to learn what else is out there. Sort of leaning towards switching to an English Major and teaching myself graphic design on the side.
I applied and got accepted to Columbia College: Chicago after highschool along with MIAD in Milwaukee. But Columbia only gave me a 3500 dollar stafford loan for a 36000 a year education so I just elected to go to a local community college for a little while, save up some money and get some scholarships to save myself some more money. It was probably the best choice I made, since looking back my portfolio sucked coming out of highschool and I really needed the time to get money and improve on the portfolio. Not to mention it helped me figure out that I don't have the patience to do what I originally wanted to do, which was technical drawing.
Just like SeriousQuiche I now have about 20 million sketchbooks filled just sitting around my room.
I am currently a junior in high school. I plan on moving towards a higher education, but I have no clue to where I'm going.
I want to double major in graphic design and music (Because when you put 'starving artist' and 'starving musician' together, you get a middle class life style. Thumbs up to that. That's sarcasm, by the way.) Although, it's difficult, trying to find a place that accepts both and is still an art school. (I want a school which revolves around art/performing arts so I can be happy with my environment, and be with people of the same interests.) I probably wouldn't mind a normal college, but as long as it has my specific majors and I don't live close to New Jersey, I'll be okay.
It would be wise to search very soon. Which I have not attempted thus far in my junior year.
Hm.
