Contributing to the Quackcast! We need your recordings/scripts!

Last updated: 25 September

This is an ongoing thread where we announce which QuackCast topics will be open for user contributions, due dates, guidelines, etc. We like having users contribute to the Quackcasts in a direct way, and we think you guys do too!

This first post will be periodically edited to reflect the current submissions, but we'll also post a reply when we update it (for completeness). Generally we'll try and give a week or two notice about upcoming topics.

**************CURRENTLY OPEN QUACKCAST TOPICS**************

Quackcast 45: Cosplay
Does cosplay have anything to do with webcomics? Well sure, if there's any people cosplaying them! We intend to have a guest for this one, but it's great to hear input from others about the topic. (Especially if it also has somehow to do with webcomics, haha!)
Submissions due: Before noon Eastern US time October 1st (Saturday)
**************CURRENTLY RECEIVED AND ACCEPTED**************

QC 45:

**************SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES AND INFO**************

1. We are looking at a maximum of 10 minutes "user contributed" content for each quackcast, but this might vary depending on topic (changes will be noted in the call for submissions up above).

2. Individual contributions should be:
- Under 2 minutes in length (if sumitting a script, should read under 2 minutes)
- mp3 format (192 kbps) preferred for audio but not necessary
- in air-able format (no editing by us necessary)
- free of strong profanity (mild words are ok)

3. Currently, submissions will primarily be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Once the time for that QC has been filled, we will not likely use any more submissions. How do we know who sent in something first? Once you've actually SENT the file/link to the file/script, post a reply in this thread saying so. That way we can acknowledge receipt and log it here. You can't claim a spot in the QC by posting a reply and sending the submission later.

We're also open to changing some of these guidelines, like the length, if users would like to see something different. If we consistently get lots of submissions, for example, we may change the time to 1.5 minutes max to be able to include more people. Or we are open to using different criteria for selecting which are aired (relevance to topic, too many saying the same thing, etc). We would appreciate feedback in this respect!

**************TECHNICAL BITS**************

Audacity with the LAME encoder is a free and very easy to use program to record and edit audio. (The encoder just lets you export in mp3 format.) However, most mobile phones and ipods also can make short recordings. In a pinch you can even record a .wav with Windows Sound Recorder.

Sending files to us: Most people use YouSendIt or SendSpace to send recordings, and then PQ or email us with the link. You can also email them directly to skoolmunkee at gmail dot com, and if oz wants direct email he can put it here. :]

Scripts can simply be emailed/PQed to us. (And ozoneocean is particularly amiable to reading scripts in a silly accent, if you have one in mind!)

Feel free to ask any questions! :]

I have something recorded but want to redo it if I have the time, which will be cutting it very fine but either way you'll have something soon.

Hey all! It's been some time since I've updated this, but we've got a bunch of new quackcasts planned which you guys can send submissions for! I think they're a bit exciting. :]

Quackcast 25: Artist Workshop
The theme of this show is going to be exercises or activities that people can do to improve some element of their artwork. For example, beyond just "practice faces" to specific suggested activities, like "try drawing a human face that looks like a bird, a dog, etc." Think of it perhaps like an art class or creative intervention.
Submissions due: Before Thursday, April 28

Quackcast 26: Making money off your comic (this was delayed from the previous planned date)
Suggestions about bringing in a bit of profit using your comic! Your own experiences are good too- like something that did or didn't work for you, and why.
Submissions due: Before Thursday, May 5

Quackcast 27: Writer Workshop
Similar to QC 25, this is (hopefully) going to be a show with suggestions and activities which people can do to improve some element of their writing. Beyond "use the hero's journey" to specific suggestions like "script 3 versions of the hero's journey by changing one element each time."
Submissions due: Before Thursday, May 12

OK Ally, i've got it! I can't listen to it right now (don't ask) but I'm sure it is brilliant. :]

Submitted entry for QC 27. Check your PQ, skoolmunkee.

kyupol, received! Interesting advice, I liked the bit at the end. :] It's 3:30 minutes though, so yours will get bumped if we get full with submissions, as the limit normally is 2 minutes. I'm not sure if we'll get many for that QC though, it doesn't seem like there's a lot of writers who get involved.

1337- do it! :D and do the song! (Although I hope it's not like, offensive or anything… that 'beware your ears' makes me nervous!)

OK, i've updated the main post again. 26/27 will be a two-parter since the subject is so big (making money) and we're hoping to have some guests. So writers' workshop is now 28 and pushed back a week.

I've also updated the contributions we've got so far- there's still room for some!

Not sure what 29 will be- a topic involving less work for us, haha. :] Maybe a genre topic or something?

That sounds like a great topic for number 29, I can't really contribute to the next three because i have nothing useful to say in those areas, but if it's about trying different genres i could definitely come up with something useful to say! (seeing as I've drawn a bit of every webcomic genre aside from sci-fi)

Oh, I'd kind of thought of picking just one genre (not an overview of them all) but that's an interesting idea too. :]

From your comment I assumed a broader view but individual makes more sense. I could definitely contribute to a few genres.

Hey, if it isn't Horror or sci-fi, I can contribute somehow

Updated!

Quackcast 29: Genres
The general topic of "genres" (as they apply to webcomics) - this is going to be a more conversational show, so anything you might like to contribute about the topic of 'genres' in particular, or even a specific one.
Submissions due: Before Thursday, May 26

Quackcast 30: Conventions
What's in it for a webcomicer? Getting a table/preparing/merch? Tips or advice? Your own experiences? What if you're just attending and not showing? How can you tell whether a con might be worth your time? Etc…. anything about conventions you think might be interesting!
Submissions due: Before Thursday, June 2nd

With QC 29 (Genres), we're also happy to take suggestions for things you might like us to talk about- topics or tips or whatever. Questions you think might lead to interesting discussion? Stuff like that!

Posted at

On the subject of genres, how do you mean? Are you wanting us to talk about what it's like to write within various genres versus others?

Posted at

Anything, really. This is going to be a pretty conversational show where we just talk about whatever topics of interest come up. :]
