Posted on behalf of my lovely other, Blackaby, who has a possibly freelance art job for interested parties…

I work for a publishing company and we do some children's books. I would like to find some art from people who would be down with illustrating these kinds of things.

Basically I'm looking for a few 'folio' style pieces if you have them, suitable for children's books, with cutesy pictures of either kids or animals or whatever. Any style, from cartoony to classic art. Let's say three pieces, too, just to be sure.

I'll then be able to print them off/send them to the folks here to see if they're interested in the style etc of your work.

This is nothing definite, please understand. I'd just like to be able to bring some in as samples and see if I can help out some artists find a little freelance work.

I know there are plenty of talented folks here hiding amongst the muck, and LOADS of people who like money. Go nuts.

I might be interested in this, though I am not sure how qualified I would be.
By the way, this thread gave me the idea for Happy Smiley Valley of Death
(it's in my signature, go take a peek.)

But if I can avoid putting senseless violence in it, I could maybe make SOMETHING that might be acceptable.

Does your friend have an e-mail addy where I could send a printable PDF of my portfolio?

I was actually working on an idea for a children's book once, but my friend convinced me that 'I'm a Rape Baby' was too offensive an idea to market to kids.

I am VERY offended.

As a rape baby, I take great exception to your friend's notion that my story is unmarketable to kids.

God, it's not like I was a FLIPPER baby or anything….

I once wrote and illustrated a children's book, but it had a tendency to be really depresing. I Never really looked for a publisher.
It subtly involved things like sexuality, nudity, philosophy, abuse, schizophrenia and death. But… still aimed at children. Honestly. There was no violence or swearing though! I somehow doubt this is what you're looking for.
Here's an illustration from it. http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/3002/dreamcatcherlarge2ap.jpg

Eek, I missed the last two on here - sorry, I'll send them now.

Okay - No Qualifications are necessary here, just good art. If you're going to submit, please do it ASAP. I'll be back here Monday, so I'm hoping if you are going to send in something, drop it in here by then :D

Thanks to the many who have sent in things! It's great!

Okay folks, I'm just letting you know that the managing editor has gotten me to contact the artists she liked and so yeah, that's done now. :/ Sorry to those who didn't get in - it wasn't because of anything to do with your art, just because she felt others suited the book styles used better. Thanks everyone very much for submitting something, it's been really great, and if I get any other opportunities to nab your folks' talents for arting (it's seeming to happen more often, actually) I'll be sure to post here.
