Well, I'll give a bit of a rant on it, since I've been a fairly vocal anti-Shadow advocate for quite some time.
To start with, Shadow is wholly unnecessary. He's the evil version of Sonic. Oh wait, don't we already have Metal Sonic? Well, not entirely; now Shadow is more of Sonic's tougher rival. Oh yeah… Knuckles.
Second, he's become more or less a symbol of what's going wrong with the series. The top of the pile of the growing list of Sonic characters that serve no function, and in fact largely fulfill positions that existing characters already cover. He's also become a symbol of, storywise, what's wrong with the Sonic franchise. Taking the light-hearted fun of blowing up robots by spinning really fast at them with angst, darkness, and all the other stuff Linkin Park sings about.
In essence he's a cheap marketing ploy to appeal to 'tweenagers who are "too old" for silly little cartoon animals, but not old enough to realize how immature it is to try and seem mature by obsessing about "mature" things. He's like the Sonic equivalent of 90's American comics; darker, edgier, and with a lot less of a point. If Rob Liefeld were to create a Sonic character… well, it would be a lot worse than Shadow, but Shadow's the closest thing to it.
Don't get me wrong, goofy, "fun" characters like Big suck too. But for entirely different reasons.

But…I like Linkin Park.And I like Shadow.And I like destroing robots by spinning really fast.And I like light-hearted fun.
