So when did the internets get a hold of you?
It happened to me very soon after the internets were made…I remember times where we had to wait half an hour for a picture or two to load. Also, I remember chatting on Napster, and back when Yahoo chatrooms were the shit. Times before IRC and bash…before 4chan and wtfux. A time when Castle Wolfenstein 3d was brand new…I miss those days.
Since then I've evolved into what I am now…and I guess I shouldn't be too proud of that. It feels good though…so good…

I'm typing on the internets!
I got online in mid-2001. I had the same reaction as Jay & Silent Bob. This weird amazement that all this information was out here to read. You can do more now then you could then, but I'm just not as amazed as I was with it now.
You told everyone you'd eat shit and then shit it and eat it again…I forgot what they actually said….
I remember being all amazed. Then after 20 minutes when the page still hadn't loaded I was like 'Ok…can I play Duke Nukem again now?'
It was the mid-90's, and I was honestly fascinated by the most simple of chatrooms. Nothing important was ever discussed. Mostly people just posted pictures and occasionally I tried to trick people into thinking I was a celebrity. It's actually kind of embarassing, now that I look back at it. The closest thing to anything of any substance I did on the internet those first few years is look up Game Genie codes, and that's really saying something…
I tried to trick people into thinking I was a celebrity.
I used to try to convince people I had a metal illness. I used a different one every week, I even made a little calendar!
Occasionally I would try to fool a brain doctor (forget the official name), early on they always caught on (one even gave me advice, she was great) but eventually I was tricking even them (mostly).
I still do this sometimes.
My avatar is naughty, but be warned! she is just luring you in to decapitate you!
I got interested in the internet so I could look up everything Kurt Cobain. Again I too look bad at how sad and pathetic my life was. i hung out with this group, and we had a Nirvana cover band. (ouch) i write it off as a mental illness that many teens suffered through the mid to late 90's…Kurt Cobain syndrome, marked by a lack of hygiene, a refusal to enjoy any aspect of life, and general overall moodiness…now know as being "Emo"

O_O
You just described me from 16-18… Wow…
And also, your avatar wouldn't get close enough to me, I'd just hurl an ""Exploding Terrorist Baby(TM) at it. It's my scapegoat for everything.
My dad had an international network thing set up with a modem on the old DOS (back in the mid 80's). He seemed really excited. "You can play games with people in Australia!" But I didn't want to. :-p I liked playing against the computer. His network died when the internet proper became mainstream.
Other than that, I guess I could get on the internet pretty early on. We had AOL before we had Windows. Only thing I could do on it was get in chat rooms. It was SLOOOOOOW and we paid long distance charges for it.
My dad had pretty good computers with CD Rom (GASP!) and running Windows 3.1 in his classroom, so we'd get on there and be amazed at the vast amount of information and pictures – all available to with the short 10 to 45 minute load time for each page. I got my Hotmail account when I was 12 years old – 13 years ago. I still use that account.
I was actually a junior in high school (16) when I started building webpages after my best friend and penpal ditched me and I was really depressed and needed a distraction. I built pages with raw HTML in Notebook – just for the hell of it. Gave me something to do. I would make a webpage about anything.
(Those last two years in high school, I spent most of my online time using ICQ instant messanger to talk with my granddad in Atlanta. He was always fun to talk to. He had all the internet/computer stuff way before we did. He programmed his own computer and was the first person to ever tell me how much Windows sucked.)
I used to live in a suburb somewhere in Manila. No its not the same type of suburb North Americans have in their mind. It is a middle class area… then if you walk 2 kms you are already inside a squatters area.
Anyway there was a few computer shops there… they charged about 50 cents (converted to US dollar) per hour for you to use the internet.
That was my first exposure to the internet. Ironically, I learned about teh pr0n first.
It was the store clerk's fault for exposing me to cyberporn!!!
And then I kept coming back with about 10 of those 3 1/2 floppy disks and fill them up with teh pr0n and teh hentai.
And after learning aout teh pr0n I learned how to be uber l33t in Starcraft, Counter-Strike, HL2, and Red Alert. (using pirated copies of course… and playing LAN since pirated copies wont allow internet access)
Late 90's some time… '97 I think, on a funky little laptop. I found it all very dull, until I discovered pictures on the net, all those wondrous images! I liked looking at manga and anime pics, art, fantasy art, and SciFi art. Then in 2000 I started putting my own art on the net.
I remeber when we first got the internet, how strange it was that we could talk to people around the world, and be able to see things that would of tooken weeks to find normally.
But how we evoled since the late 90's, early 00's, it seems like we barely saw the capascity the internet could really do.
Back off!I became an internet junkie back in '94. Before that I was a hobbieist phreaker. can't really do that anymore though..so not worth the consequences
I get on these great internets solely to get hit on by Carly's avatar.
Srsly. It wants me.
My first experience with the internet was mostly uneventful and boring.
Until i learned about mp3's, porn, webcomics, videos, flash and joined my first forum.
One i still visit on a regular basis.
The Internet still feels like new technology to me. I got started on a Commodore VIC-20 with a 300bps modem calling local BBS's and paying by-the-minute fees to dial in to the big services like Quantum Link through a 1(800) number.
I haven't read the whole thread, but do I win? ;-)
I came to the internet because the speed of dial-up was amazing (2000). I didn't know how to type at the time, but I made many new friends on yahoo chat and yahoo games…
it really gave me something to do.
…
I was also amazed that such entertainment could be found in such a weird place.
