I have a clan name (that's technically my 4th name, which is not used in daily speak) that works the same way. Most clan names refer to a place where the family originated.
Family names can have weird origin stories. In medieval Europe, it was common that certain professions would pass down the family line, for example fletchers (men who made bows). Since most fletchers had a father and a grandfather who was a fletcher and was training their sons to be a fletcher, it became their family name, Fletcher. Ever watch Formula 1? Schumacher has a name like that (it's German and means shoemaker).

I've often contemplated an idea for a studio name, that was based on my name: "Lonely Eagle". The logo would be a eagle watching over the ocean from a cliff or an eagle flying into a sunset.

my friends and i devised an elaborate chart of allowed racial remarks based on the diveristy of those who you choose to associate with (not forced to associate with like coworkers). this chart only allows so much nagging on a certain persons race and gender based on stereotypes, populace, current events, and jackassiness. As a white person my allowed comment would be greatly lowered but because of my low levels of jackassiness, being female, and highly diverse set of friends i have a higher allowance of being racist. we regard the allowance as racist points, collect enough and you can say terrible terrible things for a short admount of time without guilt and fear of judgement. different things have different point values.

I'm Arabic, low upper class, a bit of an ass (depending on my mood and to whom I'm speaking), and have to deal with 9/11 and camel F*cking jokes daily. I assume that means I get a lot of leniency with what I say… and my own bench on the bus (seriously, I brought a huge blue tool box on the bus once, NO ONE sat near me). After the day in question, the students sort of split in half between the Arabic kids and the Americans. It was worse because I was both American AND Arabic. Long story short, it took a bomb threat to return things to normal (I REALLY wish that was a joke).
