Has anyone else heard about this? In Boston, people mistook the viral marketing campaign for Aqua teen hunger force for a damn terrorist attack. It was a lite bright-like device of the moonites. It's not so much the fact that they mistook a lite bright for an explosive device that pissed me off, nor is it that terrorists wouldn't be so blatantly obvious, but that it took several weeks to take notice! If they had been real bombs, Boston's transit system would be a smouldering wreckage by now. That's a comforting thought. Plus, they blamed it all on the guys hired to put the boards up. It was THEIR JOB. But,hey, the city needed a scapegoat to hide the massive imcompitance.

Discuss.

Yeah I heard about it a couple of days ago. There's nothing really definite to debate or discuss here… You've simply mentioned a current event with some vague opinions about it…

I intend NO offence at all in saying this you understand? I just think this should go in the general forum for a while where more people will see it and talk about it ok? :)

Anyway, what I think is this: people are way too scared of terrorists and threats that simply don't exist, while the people who're really suffering most from the acts of terrorists are poor old Iraqi citizens… No one else. They make the London, Bali, Moscow and Madrid bombings look like child's play.. The New York twin tower attacks too! Way more of them have died due to the war and the acts of terrorist gangs than have died in all those big exciting terrorist attacks we in the west wet our panties over.

:P

The difference here is that Eirikr is posting his thoughts about the article Sub, whereas your post is all about POSTING interesting articles and sharing them with others. ;)

So when are you going to post some more in there hmm?

Hee. ^_^ It;s funny, over at my regular forum, we've had one of the most vicious debates in WEEKS over this.

Though there are people on there who would rip each other to shreds arguing the colour of the sky. ;)

And to think I didn't see any of those moonites… I live only twenty minutes by train from Boston. Anyway, not a nice marketing ploy, rather disfond of it myself.

What was "not nice" about it? You mean the mooninite giving the finger? That's become an icon symbol for the show. "I'm doing this as hard as i can." All of adult swim's marketing is like that. Kooky, a little offbeat, but mostly harmless. I think it actually works really well. I just don't understand how people could possibly confuse the litebrite mooninites with a terrorist threat.

I think part of the issue is that some people think AS was trying to stat a panic for the ensuing media coverage. Which is common sensically so ridiculously far from the truth. They basically put up flyer, only their flyers lit up, and the dambass boston PD decided to shut down the city assuming they were bombs after they'd been up 2 weeks alreay.

Now the mayors office is looking for someone to blame.

Bostonians are extremely cautious by nature. I can hardly blame Mayor Menino for thinking as he did. To me it was a sick marketing ploy and one that was done with very little class. They didn't even bother to pay for the advertising yet they defaced a lot of coroporate store fronts with these silly little things. I can't blame business owners for being upset, I'd be too if someone put something up without my permission in front of my or on my store. I'd be furrious! So good that they're getting in trouble, because they should never have even agreed to do such a stupid thing in the first place. No matter how much money they were paid! So, hats off to Boston and I hope Turner Broadcasting gets thrown off the air for it. Look at the mess it caused! Massive traffic and confusion. Something us Bostonians can do without!

They didn't think people would actually think they were bombs. They didn't even look like bombs. And why would you care? You could easily take it down, put it in the street, and watch a car run over it. They're with an ad firm, it's what they do and there's no reason they shouldn't have done it.

Actually there is a reason why they shouldn't have done it. As with everything else, there are regulations to advertising. And there are rules against putting up any form of advertisement in a corporate business without their conscent. This could lead to fines of great values, and that's what my arguement is really about. As an artist, who is advertising legally, I know that there are no free lunches in this world and that holds true to advertising. Either way, someone is going to pay through the nose, so it might as well be done in a just manner. Hey, if you do it right the first time, go through the proper channels, no one gets hurt. But if you don't then all Hell breaks loose. I'd - rather not let that happen.

This reminds me of that blog Sony made for the PSP which caused a backlash in the advertisement world.

umm… Then maybe they'll look like what? :)
Those roadside bombs in Iraq aren't very Moonanity…

well, if you'r planning to leave a bomb on the road you have to disguise it as somethin..suitcase, lunchbox, car…etc

Well I suppose it's slightly bomby and slightly unbomby. Plus I read something how they examined one and found no explosives in it, however they continued to detonate them all.

These were the light-up LED things, right?

Does that look like it could contain a bomb? I'm not saying it could or it couldn't, I'm just sort of asking.

No.

Not in the context that these scaredy cats were pissing themselves about.
If they were bombs, they'd have to have enough explosive material to destroy the bridges they were under or the buildings they were attached to: there's not enough room on them for even a portion of that.

The bombs Sub has kindly provided us with as examples are incendiary devices or antipersonel weapons with very limited ranges, probably only meant to strike a single target or set something on fire… ;)
And in those cases the purpose is to remain hidden, or somewhere within reach of a potential target, not high up on a building or whatever…

Look, if you're scared about Incendiary devices and antipesonel bombs, then you better start avoiding every single discarded piece of rubbish on the ground because literally anything could conceal one of those.

In short: yes, it was a beat up.

could still kill someone, so they have the right to be careful

I think we should just assume EVERYTHING is a bomb and then when anything is turns out not to be a bomb we should try to jail anyone who had even the slightest connection to them
