…and anything else in that general area… LA, San Francisco etc.
As none of you, or maybe some of you will know, I'm going to be in San Diego for the big comic con there.
I'm flying thousands and thousands of miles/kilometres all the way from lovely cold wintry Australia to lovely warm San Diego for two weeks off… fun? ^_^
The thing is, the con only goes for 3 or 4 days, I'm there for a bit longer than that, so can anyone suggest some cool things to do?

What is there to do in San Diego?
Depends on what you like to do really. I've always enjoyed seeing the Golden Gate bridge when I was a kid.
You can attempt to drive a car down Lombard Street. That is always fun. There is also the historical and haunted Alcatraz….
I've only been to San Fran and that was a While ago. I usually stay closer to Nevada. That is where the skiing is…though it isn't ski season right now.
All you can do in L.A. is cough…cause that is all I did when I was there…I know Hollywood is around there somewhere.
Well, I feel compelled to say that San Francisco isn't 'in the general area' of San Diego, it's about 500 miles away. :] Las Vegas is about 300 (though that's only interesting for a day or two). LA is a lot closer but is supposedly a hole. There's not going to be great travel links between cities because that's how America is, unless you feel like riding on Greyhound coaches. In fact getting around San Diego might be a challenge depending on where you want to go.
In San Diego… The zoo, museums, and beaches. There's a Sea World, maybe you will see someone get eaten by a whale? If you are into military stuff, I know there are some kinds of military bases nearby, and where there are military bases there are military museums. :] In fact I think there is an aircraft carrier or something there you can tour. Downtown there's the Dr Seuss mall (I don't know its real name) and other kinds of shopping and different foods, I think that's where the nightlife is (and especially while comiccon is going on). I also seem to remember lots of parks (besides Balboa, the big one) so there is probably a bicycle rental place around you could look up a number for. Last time I was there, they were building a baseball stadium, so if you're really bored and feel like spending 4 or 5 hours eating baseball food and watching baseball, and if the team is home, it's very American!
Balboa park has lots of museums and galleries in it, and I think an outdoor Shakespeare theatre. Plus the zoo. it's a huge place, it's worth spending a day or two there alone.
I've only been to San Deigo a few times, but it really left an impression. It's a lovely city and (when you aren't on the interstate highways) feels very relaxed. I'd like to go there again at a non-comiccon time and just enjoy the place. Now I'm all jealous. :[
Thanks for all that wonderful extra info about San Diego Skool! ^___^
It'll be really interesting figuring out what I want to do… Travel around a bit in the limited time I have, or stick to one place and do lots of stuff there.. Hmm. Its a tough one! I'd definitely want to see more of San Diego in any case. For travel within the states I'll try and fly when I can, I can not stand coach buses. >_<
Ugh!
Australia is a very, very big place, with human habitation few and far between. As a kid I did a lot of travel around here in buses and things. Travel here now is better than it was then fortunately, but back then lots of ling rides in cramped, stuffy buses over baking hot country was mostly all there was, so I hate the thought of it now.
-Thanks as well to Niccea!
Great and free things to do in San Diego area…
Seaport Village is a great area to walk around… Shops, Street performers and the like.
Balboa park has the zoo of course, but also the international cottages are open and a different country has a festival/lawn program each Sunday. Different museums there have a free day each Tuesday… These include Museum of Man, International Art Museum, The Science Center, The Museum of Natural History… etc…
LaJolla Cove is a great visit. There is a seal beach with viewing area, pelicans you can walk up to, and amazing vistas. The Sea Cave has an admission… like 2 or 3 dollars.
There's Old Town… Shops like the old Blacksmith, etc in a wild west theme. They also have the Wheeler House, which is a famous haunted site that has tours. This area does ghost tours thru the whole "town". Ghost tours have some fees attached.
The Anza Borrego Desert is a huge state park east of us. Very inexpensive. There's a viewing tower and amazing hikes. Keep in mind though that it's summer in this hemisphere and HOT in the desert right now.
Lastly but definitely not least is Tijuana,Mexico. We go down often and it's full of things to do. You can take the trolley to the border and walk across. Getting into Mexico is easy for non citizen, they don't even check your passport or talk to you… Just wander through the gate. Getting back into the States is the usual though, with customs and bag checks. The Cultural Center and The Wax Museum are both great, there. The Cultural Center has an Imax theater, but shows will be in Spanish.
Hope to see you at the con! We're at booth 2648, be sure to stop by!
Well, the trolley is great, but doesn't cover the whole city (it will take you down to the international border though). The buses do, but they run on natural gas and move pretty slowly. The Coaster is at the Old Town trolley station, you can take it to outer areas like Carlsbad, and there's a ferry that runs to Coranado Island (really a pennisula). Of course there's taxis, but that can cost after a bit. I'm originally from New York, so compared to that the public transport is really weak, but that's a high standard. What I like about the trolley is that it's free for kids on weekends, and I've got 3 kids.
Aack! It's not the Wheeler House it's called the "Whaley House"
There's an admission but I don't know what….
Also if you have a car…
LaBrea Tar Pits is in LA (2 hrs driving)…bubbling tar…. dinosaurs. Free admission on the 1st of each month.
"The Power of Night Fire" is a free pyrotechnic, and water effects show, that's every Thursday thru Sunday night at the Viejas Outlet Center next to the Indian Casino (20 minutes East)
If you're around August 8th come to Imperial Beach for The US Open SandCastle Competition (and festival), and see my husband Mike and I lead our 10 person masters team to victory!!! :)
