I was just wondering, how far can we go in our comics? For example, I was going to have a guy shot in the head in the page of the comic (it's actually within the game, but it's important that his game character is dead). I was just wondering how graphic am I allowed to show?

Since we're on the subject, what's the rules on sex and nudity? I don't really plan to put any in my comic, but I was just curious.

Any rules on foul language?

Actually, I recently became curious about the language thing, as well as minor drug use and "almost nudity", personally…not really sure what's the line on that kinda stuff 'round these parts.
ESPECIALLY the language, 'cause I'd like to write my characters how I actually talk, but…well, we'll just call me foul-mouthed.

As far as I know, there isn't really any rules barring any sort of violence or language, so long as you give your comic an appropriate rating (T for mild violence and language, M for extreme violence and language). Minimal nudity is allowed in M comics and pornography is allowed in A comics. For both of you, it seems like what you want to do is perfectly fine under a T+ rating.

However, since you both have E rated comics, you aren't really allowed to have any bad language or gore, so you may want to up your ratings up.

Mine, at least, was supposed to be M…I know that's what I tried to have it rated. Hmmm…I'll have to see about getting that fixed, if it's readin' wrong…
Thanks, by the way.

Mine is supposed to be rated at least T. Can somebody tell me how to fix that before I get in trouble? I went into edit the comic, but I can't find the rating adjust setting.

Kbwall:

1.
Click the down tab for MyComics and then any of the tool buttons for your comic.
2.
Click Comic Overview then hit Show Advanced Comic Descriptions in blue.
3.
You'll see your rating buttons underneath 'Type of comic'. You may have to hit Update Comic at the bottom then.

*The rating change may not become immediately visible on searches or what not, but it should be in place.

I was recently informed about the rating thing by someone who viewed my comics. I tried to change the rating but my comics still show up as the old "Everyone" rating.

I wondered if I messed up…I'm glad I read the last post though. It makes sense now.

Not only do you have to change the rating manually, you have to re-upload the image you used as a thumbnail since the rating is imprinted on that and saved. That's what I did anyways.

Draven_Xero- I've changed yours to teen for you.

Erad- Yours is already set to teen, the thumbnail just has to update to show it.

kbwall- I've made sure yours is teen as well. :)

If you want them changed to something else just let me know ok?

The guidelines mentioned by therealtj are a good benchmark to follow ;)

Cool. Thanks, yo! T should work just fine for mine…don't really thing I've crossed over to any real M situations just yet…not too sure about some of the stuff I've got planned later, but for now, at least, this works fine.

I have yet to hit any limit, and my comic is a blood bath (someone smashing someone elses skull with their fist!)

If you want sex, several web comics on there are just none stop hard core pornography!

I've read racist comics, political rant comics, comics that obviously rip off other comics, whatever the limit it is, you have to go pretty far to hit it!

Shooting someone in the face? Pfft! Go for it! That is super mile by DD standards!
(As long as you give yourself an appropriate rating of course!)

No offense but "A" rated comics don't appeal to me becuase of how much nudity and gore there are in them. It takes away from the story.

I had someone commit suicide in my comic (surprisingly it's a gag comic) and I only have it rated T+ because it wasn't too graphic. In other words it wasn't graphic at all.

A lot of people accidentally have their comics on too low a rating (usually E) because of that bug and if no one talks to you about it first before you get in trouble, then that's just crap. Luckily it probably won't happen to anyone because I hope that people have hearts.

LOL Hey TJ who said you can be Kamina?

I have no desire to show graphic sexual acts in my comic and with M rating pretty much anything else goes. I do whatever I feel like doing and have never felt constricted. That's the beauty of webcomics. The ratings let your reader have some idea of what to expect as long as you're responsible with what your doing it's all good.

So I feel that theres still one unanswered part, but how do ratings apply when it comes to swearing? Like, if someone uses the S word or F word is it M?

I try to avoid all swear words because I want to stay an E, but I think it would be good to know just in case…

I personally place "prime time" swearing in the T+ range. Basically, any words used in sitcoms or PG-13 movies. I think of more severe cursing in the M range.

In regards to swearing, I'd say it if only shows up once in a while, then T+ is pretty safe. I mean PG13 movies will let you get away with cursing as long it's mostly mild and not used to often (and you can use fuck or shit just once in movie/story arc, so choose wisely).

If it shows up at least once on every single page (just picking an arbitrary spot to draw the line), then go with M.

There's nothing to worry about. Most people have been de-sensitized to violence already. Probably an "M".

Since we're on the subject, what's the rules on sex and nudity? I don't really plan to put any in my comic, but I was just curious.

I guess the occasional baring of skin, sexual intercourse, and sexual innuendo that is relevant to the story is ok in an M rated comic.

If you're gonna have things you see in a hardcore porno film or if 90% of the comic is about having sex, that has to be adult.

Any rules on foul language?

If every single fucking one of your fucking bullshit characters decides to fucking talk like a piece of shit dirtbag motherfucker every single fucking sentence of every single fucking paragraph on every single fucking page… as if they always have to make reference to copulating people and bovine fecal matter…

Then that's an A rating.

But otherwise, it can be T or M.

So many of these replies are just saying the same thing. :] I think the general guidelines are pretty clear, and there's always going to be a grey area with some types of things depending on amount, focus, etc.

This question, or a variation of it, seems to come up somewhat regularly and usually in this category - maybe it should be a sticky?

It is (kind of!) There's a table you can access from the FAQs. It's kind of tucked away (the FAQs are at the bottom of the News page) but you can find it here: http://www.drunkduck.com/ratings.php

For some reason the contents of the table currently seem to be in black text on a black background (see - this stuff is really secret!) but, if you highlight the table as if you were going to copy it, the guidelines appear as if by magic!

You know who would know what's too far? Le Farce. Someone should ask him
