Community High Schools Under Attack; Queer Press Grant Announced

skoolmunkee at Sept. 12, 2009, 4:24 a.m.

vs
Yesterday, Top Drawer High launched an attack against Drunk Duck High (the target of the attack was this thread). Those TD High guys are so immoral and callous, just look at the day they picked! How ignorant an insensitive (so, very Top Drawer). >:[ I would like to voice deep sympathy toward the sufferers of DD High. I guess if you are in either of these community groups you should be fighting for your group!

Speaking of community stuff…
and
Both Used Books and The Hub are holding art contests! (And are totally unrelated!) usedbooks's ('s's?) is a cover art contest where all entrants get a little something, but the winner gets their art on the cover and either a book copy or some fan art, and Hyena H_ll's prizes are some great lithographs!

Another stupid fan art contest? Really? Yeah, really. In commemoration of The Hub's upcoming one year anniversary, Hyena Hell is doin' just that. Details and whatnot might be found here.

A Call to Destiny Reloaded (happily NSFW) by Dumok has just reached 100 pages! I'm also to pass on that the PDF file of chapter 5 will be released soon, this month!

Space Graffiti's Phayrh has reached 100 pages! Although that many pages is a great achievement, Space Graffiti does not like to self-promote and could only be induced to tell anyone about the milestone with promises of kittens and candy so you guys had better deliver.

News from Walrus! Apocalypse 2030 turned 25 pages old on Friday! And here you thought a walrus wouldn't have anything interesting to say.

Hitting 225 is STICKFODDER (by Stickfodder), who I am sure just reached 200 comics 25 comics ago… what is up with that?

And a last bit of news which I think some of you will be interested in! Thanks to houseofmuses for sending it to me:
Call For Submissions! Queer Press Grant Deadline is October 1, 2009!

Prism Comics is accepting submissions for the 2009 Queer Press Grant, with a deadline of October 1, 2009. The annual grant was established by Prism Comics to assist in the publication and promotion of LGBT comics.

"The Queer Press Grant is the only American grant besides the Xeric Award dedicated to independent comic books," says Justin Hall, Prism Comics Talent Relations Chair. "Since 2005 it has provided a significant annual sum of money, which varies according to Prism’s fund raising but generally comes in at around $2,000, to an LGBT cartoonist who is self-publishing a comic book with queer characters and/or themes."

Entries are judged first and foremost by artistic merit, followed by concerns such as financial need, proposal presentation, and contribution to the LGBT community. They are reviewed by the Prism Comics Board, with the larger advisory board brought in when a tiebreaker is needed.

For a full breakdown of the Grant’s guidelines, as well as for the application itself, please go to http://prismcomics.org/grant.php. Questions about the grant can be directed to Justin Hall at justin@prismcomics.org.

The Grant is entirely funded by donors, both comics professionals and fans who want to see more LGBT comics creators get published in a market in which it is still difficult for queer stories to be heard. If you would like to support the cause of queer, independent cartooning and donate to the Grant, please go to our: Facebook Cause page.

The previous Queer Press Grant recipients are:
# Pam Harrison (2008: House of the Muses)
# Justin Hall (2007: Glamazonia)
# Tommy Roddy (2007: Pride High)
# Megan Gedris (2006: YU+ME) Current series "I Was Kidnapped by Lesbian Pirates From Outer Space"
# Steve MacIsaac (2005: Shiftlifter)
