Those images that get stuck in your head

HippieVan at Aug. 7, 2015, midnight

Is there a word for these?

I’m talking about those things that you automatically start drawing when you have a piece of paper and no specific ideas in mind. The images that find their way into the margins of your notebooks, onto napkins in restaurants…or on a whiteboard at work, as in the picture above. They might even show up in your more polished art pieces. Like M. C. Escher’s tessellations or Louis Wain’s cats, those things you just started drawing one day and never stopped.

I’ve got a few of my own, all very silly:
- Men with exaggerated aquiline noses, high cheekbones and round glasses and/or old-fashioned hats. This one almost certainly comes from my history nerd infatuation with Leon Trotsky as well as some other famous aquiline-nosed figures like Napoleon, Camille Desmoulins, etc.
- Cats in spacesuits or royal clothes. My life is basically cat themed, so this one isn’t too weird. (Or is it? Having four cats isn’t weird, right?)
- Anthropomorphized mushrooms. Obviously I formed this habit while drawing Izzy, and haven’t been able to kick it yet.

Do you guys have those images that keep finding their way into your work? What are they? Do you remember when/why you started drawing them?
