My favourite parts of comic making

I’ve written newsposts before about how much I hate inking. Since Lazy Nezumi was suggested to me by the wonderful Amelius that headache has abated somewhat, and I thought I’d talk today about the parts that I really enjoy.



Character Design

The bit before you have to start figuring out how you’ll draw your character recognizably from panel to panel and page to page! Character design is so much fun because you get to let your imagination run wild, without worrying about page composition or any of that. It’s also where my ideas tend to take shape, and fuzzy notions of a characters’ personality traits find a physical reflection.



Colouring

I find this to be the most meditative part of the process. Planning, drawing, inking, etc., all require me to use my brain. Colouring comes naturally, and it’s mostly a physical process. I can listen to podcasts or watch Netflix without being distracted from my task. And since inking is not my forte, colouring is where I feel like my comic pages start to look ‘alive.’



Speech bubbles

Speech bubbles are roughly planned out in the drawing process, but actually inserting dialogue is the last thing I do. That’s what makes this one of my favourite bits – adding in the speech bubbles finally pulls a page together, and I get that great feeling of having finished something.
