Gambling Online in the Webcomics

When you hear the term "online gambling", the first thing you probably think of is a drooling addict spending all money he can get his virtual hands on at the slots. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. Of course, there are people with gambling problems but there are many others addicted to "legal" things like prescription drugs, alcohol or even adrenaline. As most people don't go further than drinking a glass of wine at the end of the day, most online gamblers only play infrequently and in moderation, usually for fun. Online gambling has become part of our lives. People all over the world are involved with it, no matter if they play games at Slotomania or All Slots casino - both of them are different branches of the same business, only with different levels of regulation. You see, you can actually win at the games of the All Slots, while at Slotomania, all you're left with is your money spent on credits and the fun of playing. Of course, the All Slots is the more profitable one, and it does pay the more taxes, and the more wins to its players. In return, governments slap an age limit on its services (which is perfectly OK, and should be implemented in social casino games, too) and hit it with prohibitive taxes. But this is a story for another day.

Online gambling is here and there's nothing we can do about it - it has found its way into our lives, and it has infested our online entertainment, too. Yet it's still a rather "hush-hush" topic, and there is one big reason for this: Google. Google has been strictly counter-online casino since the phenomenon has emerged in the mid-1990s. It has banned it from its advertising networks, forcing their owners to find alternative ways to promote their products. Since no website will ever display a Google ad with an online casino in it, most of us don't even encounter the business while browsing the web. Unless we search for it, of course - the ads might be missing but the websites are there - and there are many of them.

Surprisingly, this widespread - and, to be frank, very civilized and highly regulated - form of online entertainment has found its way into a very small number of webcomics. A simple Google search will find you comics on every topic you can imagine - except for gambling, of course, which seems to be a taboo. There are only a handful of authors who even touch the subject - a comprehensive list can be found over at the Cartoonist Group for you to grab. Enjoy.
