A Stream of Consciousness

Welcome to a stream of consciousness.

There are times, more than we might like to admit, when we encounter the chasm of blank thought that is writer’s block. So often in fact, that there are countless books, articles and videos on how to get around it; to spark your creativity again like jumper leads and a flat car battery. You want to get that flat, stationary brain of yours jump-started so that you can rev it into full gear and cut sick down the highway of motivation.

Are these analogies a bit off the road? Of course they are. Because what you are reading is a stream of consciousness. This technique is less about getting it right and more about getting it going. Whether it be a huge essay or a simple article, a stream of consciousness can help you dig down and discover what your point might be.

It helps get all the pieces of the puzzle onto the page so that you can begin seeing which pieces fit and which ones might need to be let go. In other cases, it is just about getting your thoughts out of your head altogether so that your mind is clear. It is akin to meditation in that sense, as once the thoughts are out of your mind having been followed through, you then let them go. With their purpose fulfilled they can then float into the figurative afterlife, now content.

So next time you are stuck at that dreaded abyss that is the Writer’s Block, take a pen and paper and begin to let your hand and mind go. Let all the thoughts out so that you can either pick it back up and piece it back together, or just let them float away as if balloons on the wind.

Till next time my friends!
