Music for the Mind

It is taking some time to gather my thoughts on the follow up to last week’s article, so for this post, I thought we could talk about something to helps keep me going and inspired, namely music.

Before Quentin Tarrentino begins a movie he often turns to music as a way to spur his creative process, saying, “One of the things I do when I am starting a movie, when I’m writing a movie or when I have an idea for a film is, I go through my record collection and just start playing songs, trying to find the personality of the movie, find the spirit of the movie. Then, 'boom,' eventually I’ll hit one, two or three songs, or one song in particular, 'Oh, this will be a great opening credit song.” (Click here for the full article). Music has the wonderful ability to evoke emotion and thus it can be invaluable to an artist trying to depict the essence of a scene.

When creating a scene whether it be in the writing or the actual creation of a page itself, I put on my 300+ song playlist, close my eyes and let the music take my imagination over. Every Monday I am excited to see what songs Spotify has for me to listen to and more often than not these get added to the ever growing list of inspiring songs.

I have songs for spaceship racing, songs for betrayal, love, heartbreak; for each moment there is almost always a song behind it. I do have a preference for movie OSTs but I have also found incredibly inspiring artists that have gone on to leave their mark on the stories we’ve created.
