Art Nouveau Inspired LP Covers

In an attempt to keep up with the times, I purchased my first record player and have started an LP vinyl collection.

After dusting off my father’s LP collection from the 1970s, I could not help noticing all the gorgeous cover art from bands like Yes, Led Zeppelin, Triumph, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, and Journey to name a few. The font lettering and stylistic designs reminded me of the turn of the 1900s art nouveau movement. I knew there was a revival of the art style in the 1970s, but I was surprised to see just how seamless it wove itself into popular culture at the time.

Several of Jimmy Hendrix’s LP covers had stylistic art nouveau choices from the wavy curls of his hair that are reminiscent of Alphonse Mucha to fonts that looked like advertisements from 1890 to 1910.

Art nouveau was bookended by the peacock ridden aestheticism movement and straight-lined art deco, the 1970s was preceded by the wild sixties and the beige eighties. Both periods were experimental with mind-altering substances shown by drawn smoke lines in the 1900s and the otherworldly-inspired landscapes of psychedelic worlds in space during the 1970s. In a sense, there are parallels between the time period when art nouveau first became a movement and when it went through a revival seventy years later.
