Playing favourites

I have favourite characters. There, I said it.

Although I would love to think that I love them equally, and on some level there is truth to that, there are a few I continually come back to and just want to get into them more. Now, just because they are my favourite doesn’t mean they’ll make it out of their story unscathed, (in fact it could mean that they are more likely to suffer because my love for my creations borders on the side of biblical) but I am invested in them nonetheless.

In some cases it is their character design. Maybe I like their expressions, or their hair. In many cases I love dressing them up and fussing over them like a mother bird before I shove them out of the proverbial nest.

There are characters that just plain, old cheer me up. When they grace the page, they make me smile. It’s just fun to be with them for a while, particularly if the scene prior has been heavy or dramatic.

A couple of characters have grown on me. I didn’t think much about them when I created them, in fact they were almost a throw away, only to have them open up and surprise me. They suddenly begin acting with their own agency and end up taking the story in a different direction that you would never have considered. This can lead to stronger character moments and arcs as they almost demand you do them justice.

In each story, I don’t think one sets out to play favourites but, just like people, you click with some characters more than others and, if you remain open to it, maybe they will take your hand and lead your story down an interesting road.

Do you have a favourite character? DId they end up changing your story? Tell us in the comment section below or join us in the forums.

And join us on Sunday evening for our Quackchat at 5:30PM(EST)!
