Be nice to yourself

There may be times along this path of being a content creator, where you feel that you are moving backwards; that your work is not worth looking at and that you feel like a phony trying to even attempt it. “Real life” may be calling and you have no choice but to put down what you want to do to do what you feel you have to do. Those bills, loans and 2-minute noodles aren’t going to pay for themselves.

During these times, it is all too easy to fall prey to negative thinking. It is estimated that we generate 10’s of 1000’s of thoughts a day and, when you take a step back and look at most of them you may find that they’re not particularly positive. This is because, from an evolutionary standpoint, our minds are attuned to assessing and warning ourselves of danger. Our minds don’t want to change or push beyond the comfort zone because it is, well, comfortable.

It’s easy to fall prey to negative thoughts and emotions and when we are faced with the constant barrage of people appearing to lead more successful and fulfilling lives it is hard to not look at your own situation and wonder, “What am I doing? Am I doing it right?”

To which I say, “Be nice to yourself,”.

Self-care is talked about a lot and we have many a good article in the archive that addresses it, but this article is more about training yourself to be mindful of your negative thoughts and to try and develop a healthy, “personal pep team” to keep you going when you are feeling down about where you are in your art journey and maybe even, your overall place in life.

Being nice to yourself is tough to practice at first, but is worth doing, after all the longest relationship you’re going to have is with yourself. Think of how you would talk to a friend and how you would go about supporting them when they are struggling, then take your own advice. Look at what you can cut away or put down for now, let yourself get more sleep but most of all, actually say nice things about yourself.

If you find yourself struggling for a prolonged length of time, find a professional you can talk to to help you. Hell, even therapists need to see a therapist sometimes. Remember, despite how it might look on the surface, everyone has their own struggles that they won’t tell you about, and that, in turn, means you’re not alone.

How do you practice self care and “being nice to yourself”? Let us know in the comment section below! And join us on Sunday evening for our Quackchat at 5:30PM(EST)!
