The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is Here to Enlighten the Next Generation of Children

The original story of the Dark Crystal was released in 1982 by the Jim Henson company. It was a viewing staple for many children who are now adults with a dark, yet hopeful storyline. It was a story about balance with the mystic Urus contrasted against the devious Skesis. There are adults who did not watch The Dark Crystal as kids because it was scary for them, but how scary can a film really be if it includes muppets?

Thirty five years later, the Internet has answered the burning questions of many fans of the movie and has released the prequel, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. It is a ten episode series, leading up to the bleak future in the original. The story does not disappoint, drawing comparisons to Game of Thrones and other legendary hero quests.

The most amazing part of the Dark Crystal: AoR is that is brought puppetry back to a world so accustomed to computer graphics. The creators said that the new series is 90% puppets, 10% CGI where green screens and post production editing made the characters look more realistic. The costumes no longer hide the puppeteers, but are controlled from the outside.

Based on the first few episodes, the story gets really dark right away, so the fact that it is animated does not necessarily mean it is appropriate for younger audiences. Executive producer, Javier Grillo-Maruach jokingly said, “It’s not like they call it The Light Crystal.”
