Overall tips for getting over a slump

It's very easy for us creators to get wrapped up in our own art and stories that sometimes we begin to feel stagnant. It’s important to take a step back and look at what others are doing as it might go on to serve as inspiration for your own work later. So here are some areas you can explore to help widen your inspiration and push past your slump!

Books on writing
This is incredibly important! When it comes to crafting a story, it’s a good idea to understand how a story is structured. Lack of good pacing, dialog, characters and strong story beats can let a comic down, even if the art is decent. A robust comic has a good skeleton and it starts with understanding how to craft a story. By understanding story structure, it can help you know what needs to come next and thus prevent slumps from occurring, keeping you inspired and on track.

Tutorials on how to draw better and faster
Comics are a time consuming hobby however there are plenty of people out there doing tutorials on how to push your work to the next level. Take some time to learn macros and small tricks of whatever program you are using as the time you cut down in production can be used to improve your overall work. When you feel uninspired take a look at these resources and do some studies. Aim to get better and faster and you’ll begin to see leaps and bounds in your progress.

Read other webcomics/comic books
Not only are you supporting other creators by reading their work, you begin to see what you like and/or dislike about the way they do things. Take note of how they use writing conventions, or the way in which they laid out a page. Study their colours, lineart and typography and experiment with those techniques yourself. By reading other comics you're expanding your knowledge of the types of stories out there as well as absorbing up and coming trends keeping you inspired and creatively stocked up.

Resources on health and mental wellbeing
Comics are a tough gig, even for the pros, and there are going to be times where life kicks the living daylights out of you. Make time to improve your mental and physical health, whether that be stretching every few hours, doing hand exercises, drinking more water or spending time with loved ones/pets. Make looking after yourself a priority.
