I Attended a Tech Convention Using My DD Handle and It was Refreshing

kawaiidaigakusei at Aug. 2, 2021, midnight

Technology has reached a Golden Age.

Interesting, innovative individuals that have the ability to bring enough intelligence to the table in order to improve humankind are the ones to seek out.

Forty nights ago, while perusing the channels on my subscriptions, an announcement popped up about a tech convention headed by a brilliant mastermind who promised that all in attendance would get to witness the future. Within two hours, I was filling out the registration questionnaire that included more questions that are usually asked, such as: “What is your Discord name?”

Assuming it was just asking to check whether I was a real person, I typed in my Discord name (which is the same username I use for the Duck).

The idea behind screen names on the Internet is that they are used as an alias and take on an identity all on their own. I have been using this particular screen name ever since I have been on the Duck.

Which is why it was surprising when I walked up to the registration table and saw the online name I had been using for the last fourteen years printed under my first name on my official convention badge. It was like if Bruce had “Batman”, or Peter had “Spidey” printed on a name badge. Most people in attendance knew each other solely by their online usernames and it was extremely helpful to match names to faces.

It was the first time that I was able to use both my real and online names simultaneously in public, which added to the surreality of the day.
