A face you love to hate

The villain is a counter balance to the protagonist and it is their role to push the protagonist into action and, with any luck, do it in an entertaining way. If there is one type of character that knows how to hold an audience’s attention is a villain you love to hate. Even though you would love for them to meet their timely and gruesome end, your hatred of them also gives you reason to read on. Their schemes mesmerise you and when they do finally meet their demise in the plot, whether deserved or not, you miss them.

They can range from deliciously charming to fuelling your inner most rage at their disregard for what is good. These villains are charismatic leading you to wonder how the protagonist is going to react to them. Will it be a cat and mouse dynamic such as Walter White and Gus Fring, both villains in their own right but different sides of the same coin? Or is it the threatening undertones to Hans Landa’s grasp of any situation?

When you watch a protagonist is measured against someone who embodies either the traits that the hero wishes they had or when they finally meet their match, it is interesting watching who will triumph over who and how they did that.
