Putting yourself out there

One of the hardest parts of creating a webcomic is getting eyes on your work. There are many tools out there that can assist you in finding an audience, yet, at times it feels like you are just shouting into the void. However, there are some things that you can do that will help elevate your work to a wider audience. Here are some tips and tricks that you can use to draw in a crowd.

Capitalise on social media trends
If you’re on social media, every now and then, you’ll notice hashtags trending. For instance, a while back, there was a trend on Instagram and Twitter where people were redrawing a scene from Sailor Moon. Not only was this a fun challenge, it got more eyes on our work as people interested in the trend would find our post and, subsequently, our comics and art. You don’t have to participate in every trend, however, if you find a hashtag or TikTok meme going around that you like, it might be worth giving it a go.

Create fanart of your favourite series
What better way to show how much you love a series than by creating art for it? This could be for a popular series, show or movie; whatever gets those inspiration juices flowing. If it’s for a comic you read, not only will it make the comic creator happy, they may feature your comic. Just be sure to return the favour when you get some. Alternatively, you can always buddy up with another creator to make something together, or do an art trade. This is a good way to show off your art and build friendships.

Contribute to community events
Often webcomic communities have events that you can participate in. For instance, DrunkDuck created the horror anthology not long ago. This showcased talented creators from the platform. This is a great way to become involved with the community whilst putting your comic/skills out there for all to see.

Be active in a webcomic community
Chat, hang out, offer support, trade art, collaborate, play games together; being active in the community can take many forms. It’s well worth the effort as creating comics can be isolating. Promote other creators on your social media, trade links, make it your mission to support other creators and you’ll find that it pays off. You will find you begin feeling like you have somewhere to belong and that will help you continue to create stories people will love to read.
