Friday Fashion Spotlight 10: Eradin

Welcome to…
The DD Fashion Spotlight!
Number 10.


This fella looks a bit different. That's because he's an alien called a "Cee". He lives in a forest with a group of others of his kind… He's a bit of an authority figure in his community, known as a "guardian", indicated by a mark on his body. In his case he wears it on the back of his hand.


Eradin



Eradin's outfit is really interesting and basic- Interesting because its certainly not the sort of thing you usually expect to see on an alien! He wears a long sleeve white shirt, brown trousers held up by black suspenders, white tape on his lower legs, and a big purple bandanna. The shirt has big turned back cuffs in the French style. The little "V" at the untucked front tail indicates to me that it buttons at the front. The trousers have a "fishtail" style to the back but they're unusually low for that style, sitting at the hips rather than the natural waist, they feature hip pockets, prominent side seems and they bunch where they're fastened tightly at the ankles, exaggerating the size of his calves. The button bracers are very traditional and do their job of emphasising the breadth of his chest as well as holding up his trousers. The tapes around his lower legs are called "putees", they hold the trouser cuffs in place and protect the lower leg from scratches. Finally his big purple bandanna gives him an oversized anime collar look, with the bow at the back flaring out like wings, with three white pips on each edge giving him a lot of flare.


Influences

The influence of the outfit would seem to me to be European men's working clothes, particularly peasants and farm workers from between the 1890s to the 1930s, with a slight US cowboy flare too, as evidenced by the anime style oversized bandanna. But most interesting to me is that the clothes are designed to highlight his masculinity in a sexy way: hip hugging trousers, emphasised calves, a wonderfully fitted untucked shirt and bracers that show the curve and width of his back and chest, the bandanna even gives a wider more powerful appearance to his neck!

Eradin's outfit is meant to show that he doesn't have airs and graces. He's a simple "country" fella, who's down to earth, straight forward and natural in his approach. And yet he also has a touch of flare, fantasy and pizazz. Does that match with your impression? What do you think the artist is trying to communicate with Eradin's style?
