NaNoWriMo for comics

National Novel Writing Month is here once again. Throughout the month of November writers across multiple disciplines and genres challenge themselves to sit down and write a 50K word novel. Although I am not participating this year, that’s not to say that this month can’t be dedicated to planning upcoming comic projects! Here are some ways you can harness the spirit of NaNoWriMo for comics!

Writing
Have you been flying by the seat of your pants each upload, just barely managing to get your thoughts together for a page? Challenge yourself to write out a basic outline and maybe script a few pages or plan a bunch of episodes ahead. Spend time on dialog or weaving in foreshadowing. Spending some time getting all the details you want to include in your comic out of your head and onto the page (or post-it notes) will help you down the line.

Drawing
Is your story pretty solid, but you’re struggling to get art done? Try and draw/sketch a page or two a day. It doesn’t have to look nice. Just get the ideas and basic layout out. By the end of the month it will be easier to crank out a page as the groundwork is now there. You could also try thumbnailing a chapter’s worth of pages if you want something a bit simpler. Set yourself time trial challenges to see how many pages you can get planned in say 10-15 minutes. .

Comic prompts
Feeling creatively drained? You can try using drawing prompts to help you explore your characters. How would they look as the opposite gender? Pair two characters up who don’t get much screen time together and see what their relationship could be. Trawl through Pinterest and try out some “Your Character/s Here” (YCH) poses. Alternatively, you can ask your comic friends to do an art challenge with you or try drawing your characters in their style.

These are just some of the ways you can harness the spirit of NaNaWriMo this year. So go forth and create comics!

What types of prompts would you suggest to other creators who are looking for inspiration? Let us know in the comment section below! And join us on Sunday evening for our Quackchat at 5:30PM(EST)!

Don’t forget you can now advertise on DrunkDuck for just $2 in whichever ad spot you like! The money goes straight into running the site. Want to know more? Click this link here! Or, if you want to help us keep the lights on you can sponsor us on Patreon. Every bit helps us!
