The Modern Classics: Die Hard

Die Hard was a surprise smash hit back in the day, and became famous in some circles as a template for screenwriters to pitch their stories ("It's Die Hard on a bus"…or a boat, or a jet, or in a house).

It's also talked about as a favorite Christmas movie for certain folks who like to surprise the uninitiated with the fact that Die Hard is that, indeed!

It is one of the greats for sure - John McClane is a man with some troubles. He loves his family, but
harsh words and some tough differences have set them apart. They say some hurtful things and are at
odds with each other. It doesn't look good. John's got a temper and is bullheaded.

But when trouble strikes, John is forced to remain separate from his loved ones and
to deal with some nasty thieves.

He's alone and the odds are against him. McClane has to use his guile and determination to
overcome the forces against him. He's a sassy one, too, taunting the criminals as he takes them to task.

There is a wrenching scene involving bare feet on sharp glass. yowtch!

Finally, McClane IS triumphant, and even makes a new friend along the way. The two help each other through this bond - and the new friend even saves John's life in the end!

Happily, John and his family reconcile as well, and McClane's realized how much he loves and needs them, and wants to be with them.

There's a sequel of course, where the setting changes, but it's still Christmas and a lot of similar things happen.

The film is over thirty years old, but it still works incredibly well if you ask me! A timeless classic.

Anyway, that's DIE HARD! A classic always worthy of remembering!
A Christmas movie, yes, but one that stands separate from the holiday as well. Enjoy it any time of year.

See you next time,
