Considering they are one of the founding races of the federation it's a little surprising that there hasn't been a tellarite main character in star trek yet.

It is surprising that there hasn't been a Tellarite main character. But considering they don't get along with folks, maybe they are mostly on their own ships. Starships with just Vulcans (or mostly Vulcans) are often mentioned. Plus when the Tellarites go for lunch they really are "mess decks".
