It seems like we've seen this hat do that thing before… like HERE! (also a much earlier page but it's not as good an example) After his hat "plugged" into his brain and altered him to suit it, he now has pretty much bluetooth connection with her. Of course that's why he can reach into the hat and aside from portals he's certainly set up himself (like to access his bugs in the cabin, a farm where he's getting eggs, reserved storage rooms) the hat will direct his hand to the item he requires… or in some cases the item she decided he requires, without him having to command it out loud.
