They were aware that someone was doing unsavory experiments with magic, but were never able to catch up with him quickly enough to find out who it was. That's why they don't know his real identity.

There have been boetheri mages, but the boetheri emphasis on work makes them looked down on by the rest of the boetheri. They end up more or less leaving their family behind and joining fully with the elves, the mages becoming their new family, so one really has to be dedicated to the use of magic to take it up. Since magic has been sealed, virtually no boetheri have become mages, there's just no point.

Is it bad that I've seen the word "lose" misspelled online so often, that now that I'm using "loose" properly here, it just looks wrong to me? Curse you internet! XD
