I've been seeing commercials for this upcoming release from Chevy…who can pass up a 230-MPG car? Not me. The fact that it's also electric makes it that much more appealing.
…But the best thing? It looks like something pulled out of TRON. If they don't do a Chevy Volt/Tron Legacy tie-in when they both come out next year, I will be very, very surprised…

Chevy Volt: the 230-MPG electric car
Now if they would switch the gasoline engine to a smaller version of the compressed air powered engine used by the CAT (from the indian company TATA Motors) we'll have a near truly zero emission car that doesn't need gas. You still need to put carbon in the atmosphere to produce the batteries, but it's more reliable than the air engine by itself.
This is one of those cars that I think will do two things for Chevy. A) it will help put them back on the forefront of innovation and B ) it might help them work their way back from the bad PR and economic damage they've sustained. The only problem is that the Volt is not going to be a cheap car to buy. It costs a heck of a lot less to run and charge, but last I checked it had something like a $36,000 price tag to drive one off the lot. Then again, given that the current leader, the Prius costs something like $33,000 it might not be such an issue.
yeah, I don't really like modern cars. I just don't like the way they look, they're so boring and similar. I personally like the Holden Torana or a nice Pontiac Firebird

In fact, there are very few cars that I really like the design off.
Cars, like everything else tend to have a common design theme that typifies their era.
-In the 1900's-10's it was spare framed high sitting skeletal things.
-In the 1920's they were all pretty low, narrow and had big wheels.
-In the 1930's into the 1940's design didn't change too much because of the war. During that time cars were more influenced by Art Decco. They had full bodies now, with fully covered wheel arches, fully enclosed cabs, everything was very rounded and bulbous.
-from the 1950's into the 1960's cars flattened out, grew wider and longer, lost the roundness and grew edges, lines, spiky fins.
-In the 1970's cars lost the roundness altogether, toned down all the finny grilly featuring stuff that'd been going on since the 30's and took on a squarer look generally. Square with rounded edges.
-In the 1980's the rounded edges left and cars were all angles. Plastic started to replace any vestiges of chrome features still left over.
-In the 1990's cars got the round edges back slowly, but lost their overall body styling: most of the car became one large rounded thing.
-In the 2000's the rounded theme just continued and became more extreme, so that a modern rounded version of the same model that was produced in the 80's loks literally obese. One thing that did change were the chrome features coming back.

I'm hearing a lot of rumors about the price, from $30K to even $50K. However, Chevy has not officially set a price tag for this car yet, so I'm being hopeful.
I'm also looking at the smart car, which is only $11K. …Unfortunately, it looks like a deathtrap…not much between you and the road.

That water car is awesome. I wouldn't mind waiting around for that. I hope it comes out in mass production soon.
There is also a $7,500 tax break for those who buy the Chevy Volt, but like the Prius tax break, money will run out and soon the car will no longer be eligible. You'll basically have to be one of the first people to buy the Volt if you're looking for the tax break.

And it's cool that the government rewards those who choose eco-friendly shit. I mean, even if it's only for a year or something, it's good to know that the government cares… at least a little about the environment.

there's something they're not telling you in this. last i heard the reason we dont have water powered cars is because it takes more energy to get the hydrogen out of the water than you get from burning the hydrogen. seems like they're hiding something.

You dont get style like that now days, you dont come across that much character. Just a bunch of LED's crammed in a car that looks like a toaster, or as Ozone put it "obese".
Hydrogen fuel cell cars are real and being made by Honda. In the Form of the Honda FCX Clarity, this car is nothing short of amazing. With the oil running out its going to save the car. In the same way that the car saved the Horse.

Chevy is banking on people staying within 40 miles travel distance and only slightly over every so often to switch over to the small gas tank in order to achieve 230MPG. You only get 40 miles on the electric motor before it has to switch to gas.
Chevy has stated the car will be TARGETED to be $40K in the USA. Save your money and get a 4cyl car which gets, on average, the same mileage as a Prius without the massive price increase.

Actually, that's the rub. A small 4 cylinder gets about the same as a baseline Prius. It's not until you get into the more expensive trim packages on them that they start to do better than something like a Dodge Neon or a Hyundai Elantra.
The engine on the Volt is only supposed to be turning as long as it takes to recharge the batteries and supposedly the batteries take much less time to charge than is the norm for these sorts of vehicles, which would make it get better mileage by not constantly running the engine like a lot of the other hybrids do. that's how they'd set it up last I checked the info on the Volt. But I do agree that it won't get the mileage they claim. So far my experience with cars says it'll get about 2/3 the EPA estimate if it holds to the same rough figure most other cars do. That's still a massive difference though if it even does half that well given that 2/3 comes out to about 160 mpg.
A good diesel engine usually beats any thing else for fuel efficiency over distance if the engine runs nice and consistently.

I know you mean pedal bikes though gas motorcycles are actually very efficient as is. Most already average between 60-80 MPG, and electric motorcycles are already a practical way to get around with dozens of highway approved models available from major manufacturers. Personally the only time I ever drive a car is long distances and during the winter, I love to (pedal) bike and walk the rest of the time.
That said I like the Volt. Pricey, yes but a good turn of show, and far cheaper than the showy tesla roadster or similar models. The MPG rating on actual electric vehicles is a bit misleading though. The cars don't actually run on gas per se. Instead it moves exclusively on its electric motors with a small gas-powered generator to recharge the batteries or power the electric motors directly in an emergency.
This overcomes the design limitation of many pure electric cars without generators in that it doesn't rely on long regular recharge cycles. Current Major auto builders seem to like this idea with Toyota, Honda, and Nissan already offering or about to offer similar electric+generator types of EVs.
This is different from the already commonplace hybrids which often simply have electrical "assist" motors that lighten the load on the traditional gas engine, or vice versa.
