It's been all over the news for a few days. Apparently a long list of dog and cat foods is being recalled due to a mold spore that causes kidney failure in dogs and cats. For those of you who have furry loved ones, I'll give you a list now, so that way you don't have to go digging for it on the web sites. And the list goes as follows.

Major Pet Food recall. These foods cause Kidney Failure in both Dogs and Cats!
wow thats scary…True, but that doesn't mean we're totally safe… Maybe they just didn't bother to put international brands on the list?
luckily, here in Australia we have none of those brands…
But yeah, I'd say we're probably safe in Oz, at least for this outbreak. Logic would suggest that this is probably about some common supplier to all those "brands", a supplier only local to the US.
A new supplier of wheat gluten to the factory (Menu Foods) is believed to be the problem. The ingredient was tainted with rat poison.
It doesn't affect ALL products of those brands, just a specific type of food manufactured by "Menu Foods" under those brand names. The products affected are the "cuts and gravy" pet food (wet and moist). Dry kibble is fine.
Thank god my pets haven't been affected. I'm sure as hell not buying anything made by Menu in the future, though.
My heart goes out to the people and animals who WERE affected, though. This is so sad, and I can't imagine how awful it must be for them.
By the way, I heard that it was rat poison in the food, but I'm not sure how true it is. Anybody know anything about that? Whether or not it's true, and if so, how it got in there?
EDIT: Ah, I just read usedbooks' post about the rat poison… I probably should've read all the other posts a bit more carefully. But my second question still stands – does anyone have any idea how it got in the wheat gluten?
I read in the post today that studies at a medical research facility showed that the wheat was tainted with rat poison illegal in America, believed to have come from China.
However, I will say, as much as this sucks, Menu and many other pet food manufactures recalled all their brands instead of just one of them you know? As the news tells it, the other brands recalled their products because they got some of their ingredients from the same supplier - but, as we all found out, wheat was the culprit.
And the dry foods are still totally safe.
i think there is more danger to smaller pets than larger ones. i'm guessing kidney failure is caused by overworked of the kidney as it tries to get rid of the poison. smaller body, less blood…less dilution of the poison.
my dog eats ol roy, so i checked the UPC code on the website and it didn't match any of the ones they are reacalling. guess all those companies are gonna loose a lot of profit and customers.
The rat poison would've gotten in the wheat product simply because rats like to eat it and they must have used poison to get rid of them. Some fool probably just made a big mistake with it.
If it's moist and gravy type foods then the Gluten is usually used as a binder and thickener isn't it? They do use wheat products in dry foods too you know, and interestingly enough dry food by itself has been known to cause death in animals from kidney failure- when they don't have enough water.
It's a terrible thing that happened though. :(
