School blocking sites... Bad... or for our own good...

Posted at

bleah.

blocking is only good when it makes sense.

but they DO need to allow a few more fun sites…that aren't math games.
i mean…do we really wanna spend a free day on the comp learning about math or rennaisennce Europe?
no.

and NO REMOVING THE INTERNETTT!!

*hugs it*

that would make things dammed impossible.

Why? I mean really. Why would anybody need something non-educational in an educational facility. You got free time and need something to do? Go to the gym ya lazy bum!

Just kidding. When I was running school computer labs I'd let one or two computers have access to popcap or crazymonkey if the kids deserved it. At a high school I worked at I even let them have watered down LAN parties using the school systems on special occasions. All in moderation guys. The main point though it that students should NOT have unrestricted access in schools let alone during class hours.

ok lets put it to you this way, if you had to develop routing blocks against the ENTIRE FREAKING INTERNET, and there was something as easily blocked and widely abused as a flash video, do your think your school IT director is more worried about the Dora the exploreer, and virtual piano, or the adult section of newgrounds? There is always another legitimate resource that can be used as an alternative to a blocked site. IT admins are forced to block very broad categories for the same reason parents don't let their kids loose in a red light district after dark. While they Might be safe and avoid dangerous areas its too much of a risk to take. In fact it would be stupid and irresponsible not to use widespread blocks. Believe it or not network admins normally have a good reason for their actions. It is not their job to make sure the students are miserable. Thats what the PE teachers are for.

No offense, but you two seem to need MORE education, not less. Trust me.

i'm sure everyone here has gone to school and is aware that obviously a lot of stuff goes on that doesn't relate to education, but school is about that. people don't pay taxes so you can go and watch some guy beat mario bros. 3 in 12 minutes. i am not for school's blocking sites, but more and more i see that the freedom of the internet is something like all freedoms that should be earned and deserved.

I agree. I advocate the institution of computer user licenses. like driving a car of flying plane, you should pass a test of basic users skills before you can use public computers. yeah right, NOT.
Indeed it is a freedom that should be earned but like any liberty you shouldn't exercise it at the expense of others. kicking back and playing runescape and checking out your myspace at school is an irresponsible use of MY daxdollar you underage cretins.
Blocking is a way to protect the schools purpose as an educational center regardless of how miserably it is failing or succeeding in teaching the students. They have the right to their full internet at home.

actually proxy detection and blocking is a standard feature included with most school restrictions software. Results may vary if you try to use a proxy. But seriously to the school-age users reading this: do the teachers not give you enough to do, that you have time to update your comics and play games?

As far as school being all about learning – no, not really. Public school is primarily about indoctrination and socialization – basic skills are to a large extent a secondary emphasis (it doesn't take 12 years to teach kids to read, write, and figger maths).

This is covered in any four-year teaching college – your primary purpose in the classroom as a teacher is to teach the kids to be good little citizens and prepare them to function in the 40-hour-per-week work environment, do what the boss says, and to get along with their government and others.

As such, maybe blocking random useful public-access research sources is a useful way to teach the next generation how to deal with pointless frustration and administrative stupidity. That seems like potentially a pretty valuable lesson to me!

Public schools have failed. At the least in my case.

Schools shouldn't have it.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. The world is moving on and technology is more and more becoming a part of everyone's lives. We can't ignore it. Removing the internet from schools would set us back about thirty years.

How, exactly, would it set us back thirty years? Can I remind you that I'm only 25, and yet we did not have the internet in my school? More to the point, of what use is the internet to schools?

Note that I'm not saying schools shouldn't have top of the range computers, or the latest software, or have all their computers on an intranet. However, the internet is not a viable form of information gathering, and I can honestly think of no reason why students should need it while at school. Anyone can publish on the internet, which makes it an unrealiable source. Teachers don't accept internet sources - the one that gets brought up most at this point in the conversation is, unsurprisingly, the one most used to gather "reliable" information when on the net, wikipedia - so why on earth should kids have access to the net on school time? If the teacher desperately needs some resource (say, image files) from the internet for a class, it's really no big deal to give him or her access - but the kids? No. It's not useful.

The internet is not a wonderful educational source, nor a font of information - in essence, it's nothing more than a vast global communication device. A great big social orgy. It's not useful to students, it's a distraction and a time waster.

School is for learning, not messing about, not playing games, not surfing for porn, not poking your friends on facebook, not leaving silly comments in forums. By all means, do all of those things when you get home, but while you're at school you shouldn't have it.

And that's not taking kids back thirty years in terms of technology, not at all. It's no more offensive - nor any less sensible - than banning mobile phones in classrooms. Which all schools should also do.

I have to agree with Pix there.

There are some new theories, resources, teaching methods, and programs that rely on and use the net, but the time wasting/distraction aspect really does seem to far outwiegh the (mostly) proposed benefits.

WOT?

But when will I phone my friends? I can't do it at home because then the purpose of having a phone that I take to school with me is completely defeated!

THAT IS LIKE SAYING WE SEND OUR OFFSPRING TO SCHOOL TO LEARN THINGS INSTEAD OF TO DICK ABOUT ON THE INTERNET.

I gotta be the devils advocate on one point Pix.
Just as most schools have shop, home ec, machine, driving, and aggy classes they should also have basic PC use classes. Many schools already do. The idea being that school is not strictly academic in nature. People seem to have forgotten that its good to be well rounded and have at least a general knowledge of things they'll find out in the wide world on their own. That goes double for computers.
I do agree with the point on internet during class though. The teacher is the only one in the room that truly needs full network access. For most classes the kids don't even need computers. All of today's prominent geniuses learned on paper not LCD or CRT. I've made it known that I'm a technologist but even I have to admit computers don't need to be fully integrated in the typical classroom.

I completely agree; as life skills go, learning to use a computer is a pretty essential one.

On the other hand, I'd argue the thing kids need least these days is tutoring in computers. Most of them seem more than capable of teaching that to themselves, in their own spare time. ;) The sheer number of young people online (versus us old fogies who didn't grow up with the internet) is fair proof of this. The only thing I really worry about (with kids and new technology) is the way our language seems to be totally going down the toilet in favour of shortened, online forms. That's a bit depressing.

But that probably just makes me old and out of touch, I suppose. XD

WHoa, whoa whoa. At least in high school, a cell phone was a necessity because of AFTER school. Granted, phones in class rooms are a hideous distraction and often used for cheating, but you can't ban them in classes without banning them from schools in their entirety, and that's a horrible thing, imo. The days I would forget my phone and have to call my parents about some project I had to stay to do, or go to someone's house unexpectedly, were horrible. Yes, school offices have phones, but that's such a pain. And what if you were going to spend an extended time after school somewhere else?

My school's policy was that cell phones couldn't be visible on school grounds during school hours, including lunch. That made sense. You could have them in your backpack (in fact it was encouraged), but not out until the last bell rang at 2:10.

Wow. Well, I guess at school the twenty pence I kept in my pocket for such emergencies was stupid. I guess I got kidnapped and raped and left in a hole, dead because I never had a mobile. I guess public phones don't exist any more.

Yeah, whatever. Keep them out of school. Switched off all day long. I don't care if you've got them in your backpack, switched off - that's fine. Just don't have them going off in lessons - don't be texting that hawt guy that you want him during geography.

For fuck's sake. Anyone would think I grew up in the fucking stone age. If I take your mobile phone away, you won't die, you know. It's not as important as you seem to think - amazingly, shockingly, we survived without them.
