You are finally awake, but you're not feeling nice. In fact, you have a very strong urge to go back to sleep. However, you have to be someplace an hour or so and you have to find a way to jolt yourself awake. What would you do?

For me it takes a cup of hot coffee sometimes. And sometimes it ends up in my lap. Guaranteed to jolt me awake either way.

Or sometimes the sharp flavor of cheddar will do it… :)

I realize "shit, DD had a major problem yesterday, I'd better check things right away."

Too soon?

Hit the showers, the rush of cold water is enough to get me out of dreamland most days.

This morning when I got up I hit the snooze and went back to sleep.
When the alarm woke me again I figured that I really shouldn't hit the snooze again since I had an early lecture to get to.
Instead of hitting the snooze, I decided to hit every other button on my alarm clock until it stopped; and then I went back to sleep.

This is how I am every day and always have been; even as a baby I didn't get up 'til 11am. Any morning stuff I need to do, like showering and shaving, has to be done just before I go to bed. If I try those in the morning, somebody is bound to get hurt. This works out alright as I don't go to bed until 4am anyway.

I'll drink several cups of tea in the morning, but still won't be fully cognizant until 11am.

That's pretty much exactly how it is for me too. Everything.

I'll drink coffee, but only after 11am usually or else it goes through my digestive system like a ravening bunch of Visigoths.

If I'm at home I make a pot of coffee and try and get dressed/teeth brushed/face washed while it's brewing. Between forcing myself up, the smell of the coffee brewing, and the eventual drinking of the coffee, I get a burst of energy to force myself to keep going.

If I'm at school I get myself ready to leave and grab a soy iced coffee from the Starbucks down the block. They know me by name in there. : B

Straight black coffee and a mountain dew for the road… that is what hits me in the face with the wakeup bat.

I look into the fridge to see if I have any soda leftover. My freezer is the only thing that keeps things ice fresh since the bottom half won't seem to do it anymore (or it does, actually, but not as strong as it used to; so everything goes on top now).

If there's a soda, I pop off the top of a Mountain Dew or Mello Yello, then get prepared. If not, it's a shower and an e-kiss to a girl friend of mine from across the States to wish me luck.

Any sleep I miss I'll get back in the evening before dinner.

Mornings at my house would jolt anyone awake. Three kids under the age of three needing various breakfasts, diaper changes for some and potty breaks for others. With kids there always seems to be something to give you that "good morning" slap in the face.

For instance, yesterday I rolled over and found my son standing inches away from my face at the edge of my bed. I nearly shit myself. Instantly wide awake.

Coffee, dah nectah of dah gawds.

Alarm goes off, I have somewhere to be? I'm up and padding into the shower after starting the coffee.

The secret is routine and habit. Build a program that gets you out of bed and ready for the day. You don't have to be alert or aware just let the program run to get you where you gotta be when you gotta be there.

I learned it in the Army. Before that I never got up before noon. Now I have everything timed and know exactly when to roll out of bed and I'll be there. And you always have to allow for friction.

Proper planning prevents piss poor performance. And son of a gun if it doesn't work.

This is scary true for me. Some mornings when I'm especially sleepy, I'll arrive at work and cannot recall driving through certain portions of the commute. But I arrive safe and sound and, since there's no dents or blood on the car, I guess everyone else is OK, too.

I stay up late and get up early every day. Most days I don't remember driving to work. I usually come out of my stupor around 10 am. It does make the work day go faster when you barely remember what happens for the first two hours.

Wait…

Until mother comes in and pulls the blankets off, usually.

But mostly I wake myself up with cold. You'd be surprsied at how effective sticking one leg out from under the warm covers of your bed is at waking you up in the morning.

If I can get myself to stand up, I'm fine.
Getting there usually involves hitting the alarm clock until I realize "AW CRAP I'M LATE!". That little bit of panic usually makes the sleepiness evaporate.

Hahaha, in my mind you are now an anime stereotype! :)

Don't look at any pretty girls unless you have a cup under your nose…

For me I just lie there thinking about how crap I feel, weighing up whether or not I should take the plunge and call in sick. Then I just go on and get up and get ready anyway, following my mechanical morning routine.

So what's the problem here? I just woke up, super sleepy, but can't go back to sleep? Oh, you mean like what happens every day?

I force myself up, slap cold water on me in the bathroom, then move on. Sad thing is I can't sleep until 5 am, yet I always manage to wake myself up around 11 am. So yeah, this happens every day!

Eat some chocolate.

Taking a shower helps.

If none of these work, I will sometimes rest for ten minutes.

Sometimes doing the opposite helps. Just getting out there and moving around fast.

I find practising Japanese tongue twisters (Specifically "Nama Mugi, Nama Gome, Nama Tamago.") is a good way to wake up…

… Problem is, sometimes I'm that groggy I can't even remember waking up and talking to my mum. Let alone remember to do a tongue twister.

It makes my parents think I'm awake when I'm not. It's caused a lot of arguments.

Take a REALLY cold bath. this will jolt sleepiness, take two sachets of "Extra Josh" powdered energy drink and mix it into cold cola (Pepsi or Cocacola) If no "Extra Josh" drink a strong energy drink such as Cobra or Samurai or Lipovitan. Stationary Jog for 30 minutes or all the way to office.
