The American government seem to have a remarkable reliability for combining corruption and ineptitude, manifested in a completely undeserved self-assurance of their illusory superiority.

It has reared its ugly head yet again. Please visit the site and submit your comment, spread the word, and do what you can. Good grief.

Important, and necessary for the internet to even exist as it does today.
There's a lengthy explanation in the link hushicho provided, but I'll give you the quick overview. This is also another more in-depth look at what the 2 parties are trying to accomplish with this.

Section 230: No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.

Basically, it protects content hosts/platforms from being sued over the content posted by individuals.

In fleshspace, if someone uses a gun or a car to kill people, the gun manufacturer or car company does not get sued. This is a similar protection for online content providers.

Right now people can say stupid as hell stuff on twitter and may only get banned for breaking TOS if it's tantamount to hate speech and death threats. Twitter itself does not get sued over that stupid stuff that is said.

Is it perfect? Nah– but removing it without something better to replace it is like taking off the bandage that was preventing you from bleeding out because it got a little dirty, then leaving the wound uncovered and letting it fester.

So basically if this is repealed, you can't say ANYTHING that someone might take offense to because no website could afford the legal fees, and websites like DD will die off.
