I just want to express my utter disdain for the current time. The 90s was way better. We were on our way to universal love and peace. Now these motherfuckers have divided us. You know what I mean if you think about it. If you are from that generation that had hope. Now we have ww3 looming on the horizon. It sucks. Hey zoomers, please chime in. I'm so drunk. These forums are basically dead so I'm saying what I wanna say.

How did you lose your skateboard in the ocean man?

Back in the 90s I meanly remember it differently… There was the brief period after the fall of the Berlin wall and glasnost where people we acting as if it was all peace and love but then the hammer fell and there were wars breaking out everywhere and the former Soviet state were a grab bag of the worst corruption with a free for all openly encouraged and supported by the US (so you can see why Russia holds a grudge).

Meanwhile the USA was lording its new position is supreme world superpower over everyone and pretending like it was the arbiter of peace and objectivity and fairness, while being the same dick that Britain and France had been before it.

Popculture lost its fun and humour with the death of things like 80s metal…. things were only funny in an ironic sense and everything else was super serious and earnest.

Massive world economic downturns meant us young Gen Xers couldn't expect a job for life anymore or a job at all. Things just collapsed…

There was Mad cow disease, the AIDS epidemic was going super strong, drug addition was a major issue, bird-flu, H1N1 and swine-flu popped up…

There was a serial killer on the loose near my art collage. Plus an unrelated murder…

The mullet and stone-wash denim died out though, that was good.

I guess I'm holding on to that 30
minutes that existed for that moment that was between the wall falling and the hegemonic vacuum filler. When the techno was pumping and the PLUR was real….

Also, I like some fool use it on the docks

I feel you. So much for the "modern Roarin' 20s".

Not born in the 90s but the 2000s.

Saturday morning cartoons {on antenna television}, VHS tapes - even the orange ones, video games were lively, Windows 2000 and XP, dipping waffle sticks in syrup (breakfast was lively even back then). I still search up these nostalgic things now… wanting to go back to that time period…

I grew up in the 90's, but I was way too young to identify the culture of the time, let alone follow the news broadcasts and such and simply enjoyed the stuff of that time for the same reason any kid enjoys the stuff of their time. Didn't develop much of a contemporary music taste until the 2000's with stuff like Bomfunk MC and Evenascence.

Sure I still use a VHS and I still play video games from the 90's and 2000's, but that is overall because I never really got sold enough on the stuff that came aftwerwards rather then trying to maintain the lifestyle of a past era.

What I do feel kind of blessed about is that I grew up in an era before the internet took over society. I only became lightly aware of it the year before my teens and didn't really start using it myself until my late teens. Probably why I've always relied on Youtubers to tell me what's going on with social media, because I've never been sold enough on that either to figure it out myself^^

Good things about the 90s:

Comics became a huge vibrant industry for a while (till the bubble burst). Comic shops all over, "nerd" culture started to take over. I think that boom then specifically is what's behind the boom in comic book movies now.

"Alt" culture was big, it gave us movies like Tankgirl, bands like Hole, it was "edgy" and cool and I miss the status it had.

Manga and anime really stated coming to the west in a big way, without all the harsh editing that to used to have.

The internet was just starting in the mid to late 90s as a useful thing. It gave us access to all sorts of fan-culture we'd never had before.

Music sharing was huge…

To be honest, I like today.

I can print my furry porn openly, people can and share fan games, connect to like minded people (for better or worse), watch cool stuff from the past and use it to influence my stuff now with just one machine instead of a complex system of mechanics and politics of distribution, hell I seen a one man full length film get made.

There was a lot of fun stuff, and wish things like cartoons would come back, but it also sucked too. Everything was angry, everyone was scared of Y2K, the push to become more "mature", the riots, Asian hate being swept under the rug, terrorist attacks everywhere, extremely edited anime even for adults, being being gay was a death sentence in large parts of the country, so forget being any like trans, bi, asexual, furry, goth, so on and so on.
To top it off, renting movies could be a huge pain in the ass.

Basically, like old stuff but I like to see what new crap that is going to happen, bad and good.

I was born in 1989 and grew up during the 90s, so of course it's easy for me to say that the 90s were a better decade compared to now, because it was a much simpler, more innocent and wholesome time for me for that very reason: it was my childhood, no adulting, no responsibility, and life's biggest worries were managing to stay above a D-average in math, or if the cable was still working to watch new Friday night episodes of our cartoons.

But even so, generally speaking, yes, the 90s were probably the last decade of true innocence in the world; once we reached the Turn of the Millennium and 9-11 happened, that was when just about everything took a turn for the worse in our dreary, work-a-day lives.

Ah the good old 90s - a big comeback for misogyny, so called 'lad culture', Cool Britannia, not being able to cross the street without hearing three different but the same songs by Oasis, all stuffed with hollow references to the 60s when Britannia really was cool, ladettes now for god's sake, Bosnian war, ethnic cleansing, mass rape, call Elton, it's time to wave his candles in the wind again, the hits just kept coming.

Hope you get your skateboard back Lothar or failing that, a mermaid learns the backside flip.

The years of sharing games and porn through floppy disks, of having walls filled with VHS and feeling proud to catch a song on the radio you could record to your mixtapes. When you really owned something instead of being allowed to use it as long as you're registered to a service and the service isn't denied. It's not difficult to romanticize these aspects, because nowadays, everyone's life is overflooded with stimuli. Everything is just a click away and everything you consume becomes replaced by a hundred new options by tomorrow. Your friends and neighbors become trending brands just by sharing videos of themselves and yet no one will remember next month. And people still complain by their data taking up too much space, just not on a wall of VHS, but a few inches of a portable drive. Playing video games with your friends on the couch became traded in for being able to play video games with just about anyone, but never having to see any of them face to face. As a millenial, it's an experience of burnout for me. I guess it's a factor in why AI is somewhat popular. People are still hungry for something new and impressive, the next technological breakthrough, but with so much stimuli and such a fast-paced experience rarely anything counts as revolutionary anymore. Perhaps nostalgia became a counter-culture.

It's the decade I got married in and had some of the worst jobs with the worst supervisors ever.
Also was most of my time in the Army and that was the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Diesel exhaust, hydraulic fluid and cordite. Smells that stick with you for a lifetime. Chilly morning and the wafting scent of diesel exhaust can still bring a tear to my eye. Yup, the 1990s.
Who knew my whole world would come crashing down so soon after the start of a new decade?
