Dan: no, i don't have a Powerjeff fan page on facebook. we've joked around about having one, but never actually made it. i did put a link to my comic page on a couple people's facebook pages, however.
what kind of struck me about the generated revenue was who would front the initial cash for the ad, and who would be making money of the clicks.

i don't think my friend would call me to pull my leg like that. he's a very honest man. and he read the ad, which featured the "chia spores ceral" page that was the most recent page at the time….one that could be linked by using the default /powerjeff html address that i included in those links to my friends (but not the afore mentioned friend in question, he's a longtime fan of PJ as it is).

one thing that does kind of worry me…..is the change in facebook's TOS. i am going to have to read that all the way through again. that is pretty scary to think they could just use and photos or artwork i have on my page. looks like i'll be taking a lot of my imagery down from there.

Sounds like a densely reworded Creative Commons almost.

json, if you have been watching the news Facebook have changed their new TOS under the public pressure back into something that the users feel more safe with.

The only option here that makes any sense would be that another one of your friends bought the ad space for you and hasn't told you. Depending on how much that costs though, it could have been a pretty nice gift…

very true. i'm not sweating it, one way or the other. just made me curious as to whether or not we're adverting on different websites. now i know we're not officially, i'm actually not gonna worry about it. if someone wants to advertise for me, then awesome. more people to read my crazy story.

it actually sounds like something my mom might do….she's sneaky like that, and she lives on facebook. she'd never admit it though.

I want a mom like yours! :-) Well, I think nothing to do but wait and see if we see it again. Anyone who does, please grab a screeencap. I wouldn't want to contact Facebook directly without some sort of proof. I believe your friend, json, and I believe you, but I'm sure Facebook would blow me off if I went to them saying, "Somebody told me that somebody told them they saw this add."

It still worries me that somebody is out there using stuff from this site that we don't know about. What if the banner sends them to www.powrjff.com and it's a pron version of your story? That's pretty far fetched and pretty darn unlikely, I know, but it's the worst case scenario of somebody using your work towards ends you don't know about. You have to be careful with that sort of thing and take it very seriously.

I actually didn't know about the new Facebook TOS until this thread. I'd be very uncomfortable putting any of my original work up on the site given that language you posted, json. Creepy…

a Powerjeff porn would be pretty nuts….however unlikely it is.

but i didn't think about it from that angle….people using the art we do to generate hits on their own sites, whether it be porno or online poker. especially if they are making money off of what we do without us knowing it. pretty shady, and actually makes me a little mad.

i had already told my friends on facebook about looking out for ANY drunkduck ads on there, taking a screencapture, and then clicking the link and seeing where the ad takes them. just in case it, or any comic for DD pops up again.

Thanks, json. I REALLY appreciate your help on this. And I really don't mean to get anyone up in arms about this or paranoid about people stealing their work. It's just not something to be taken lightly, people using what belongs to you without your knowledge.

With this, I can't help but think of when people have viewed some of my sites and seen images replaced with other random stuff. In those cases, something was wrong with their computer.

Ah, who knows.

I don't agree with them using OUR comics, without our knowledge and permission, to advertise THEIR service on other sites.

I agree.

Nor would we, guys. EVER. I hope the fact that I'm here trying to figure out who IS using json's stuff proves that. We're really not the big evil corporation out to steal everyone's ideas that we get painted as sometimes.

I'm big and evil, but that has nothing to do with Platinum. :-)

(and if that isn't an invitation for Carly to jump in, I don't know what is.)
