I get the hiccups fairly often and always at least twice during the same day. I think the most I've ever had them was eight times throughout the course of one day. It's pretty annoying.

I've given up on most of the hiccup remedies that I've tried. The only one that usually works for me is the whole, "drinking water and holding your breath afterwards" deal. However, it doesn't work so well when you have nothing around you to drink.

I've got them right now and I wondered, what do you do when you have the hiccups? I'll try anything at this point. Even the stranger remedies.

My hiccups are funny. I often get them when I'm done eating but I only have really mild ones and I hiccup 2-3 times and then I'm done. You could try to have yourself scared. I've heard that works. I've would have said hold your breath but you already mentioned that.

I have to do the drinking-water-upside-down bit. It's been the only thing that works short of riding them out. For those clumsy folks (like me) who can't quite coordinate this while holding the glass, you take a drink from a glass, then fold over like you're going to touch your toes with your head hanging down, THEN swallow the water. You may have to have a couple sips - three is the most I've ever had to do, and those were some epic damn hiccups.

Ohh! I never tried the upside down bit.
As for the scaring, it's pretty hard to scare me. I guess I expect someone to try and surprise me when I have them. >_> It rarely works.

drink lots of water. Swallow more amounts per time than how you'd normally drink.

I heard that hiccups are caused by too much oxygen or something… it hasn't been proven but holding my breath works for me. Drinking water with my head bowed also works…

Then again, I'm fine with just hiccuping it out. =\

Decapitation. Works without fail.

But seriously, when I get hiccups, I put my thumbs in my ears, forefingers on my nostrils and have a drink. It really works!

Can be, but it's not about breath really. It's a diaphragm spasm. It can be caused by eating too fast… it depends.

My cure is that I try to burp. The trick is to fool that diaphragm somehow, or relax it… So breathing tricks are good too; the trick Bittenbymonk mentioned is good, or you can do something that makes you breath at a nice constant pace like relaxing reading a book, or even going for a run could help! :)

I swear this works: Take a big glass of ice water and put a straw in it. Plug your ears with your fingers, and drink as much of it as you can without stopping.

Falcon punch to the diaphragm! I should have thought of that!

Some of these suggestions sound like they're worth a shot. I'll definitely try some of them next time.
…With the exception of Wikipedia's, of course. I don't want to know how they figured that one out.

Well you know what they say… When you experiment, you're bound to find out stuff.

I suppose that'd be how the Wiki method would work ;)

I got my cure from Mary Poppins. A spoonful of sugar.

There is also controlled breathing from the diaphragm like performers use to project their voice.

The rectal massage… I think they got that in the information exchange with our anal-probing grey alien friends in Area 51. In exchange we taught them how to burp on command.

When I was a kid I had this sure-fire hiccup cure. It's long and its a little silly but its worked everytime.

Take a breath and swallow it. Then without letting it out do this two more times. Then still without letting it out, puff out your cheeks and hold it as long as you can.

When I say it's worked everytime I don't just mean for me, I mean, like, for everyone I've ever suggested this to.

I don't get hiccups anymore. I'll get like one or two then I can just swallow it and they go away.

Drinking water upside down works. awkward to do but it works.

Eating Bananas sometimes helps too. All that happens when people try to scare me is that I hiccup louder.

I usually inhale as much air as I can into my lungs (until it feels uncomfortable) and then hold my breath for as long as possible. When that doesn't work I exhale as much air as I can and hold my breath again. Works for me almost every time.

You know what's weird? I haven't had hiccups in like literally 2 years!

…But whenever someone around me gets them I always tell them to hold their breath and swallow (whether it be through drinking something or not) as many times as possible.

That way, the muscle spasms that are causing your hiccups with be offset by normal muscle rhythm blah blah blah no more hiccups.

I have two methods that spring to mind. The one I use and the nobel-winning method.

My method is to hold my breath. Doesn't need anything else involved, you can do it on the spot. I fill my lungs up as much as I can, and hold it until it starts to really hurt and then I let it all back out again. All of it. Makes you breathless for a bit, but the hiccups are gone.
Been using that method for years.

Seems a bit extreme if it causes you pain, but then there's method 2…

The scientific method… Is to perform a digital rectal massage… Basically… Put a finger up your jacksy.
