There are various schools of Capoeira. Some are more dancey, in some you just show off more (headstands or whatever), and some it's more aggressive and REALLY about fighting.

Some people used to do that at my university. Stupid hippy dance students… and they did it crap. Watching them do it was dulllll… So Capoeira isn't all the same thing.

Pigua… the problem with wushu styles is that they're really complicated in application, so you need to put serious effort into learning it as a fighting art. Just the katas alone are complicated enough to learn… it takes a master to apply it in real fighting.

Anyways, I'm officially green belt in taikwondo. I should be higher but (1)I don't like to spar, (2)I don't like to spend the money to upgrade belts, (3)I don't like the added responsibility and discipline that comes with being a high belt in a group environment. I'd still wear a white belt if I could help it… but it got too obvious so I was peer-pressured into leveling up.

The times in taikwondo class I most enjoy is just me, sandbag, music, and no one else around.

Yep, that's right. :)

I went to a MMA gym (they taught mostly striking since their head sensei is a kempo blackbelt and did muai thai) for about 6 months. Trust me… either you get your ass kicked or you come home with every single muscle sore in your body.

For those who wanna learn martial arts, I'd recommend Brazilian Jujitsu or Muai Thai since their classes have at least 50% of the time devoted to continuous sparring. Not the point sparring in where you separate after landing a hit on the opponent. Continuous sparring is as real as it can get compared to a real street fight.

On the other hand, I wanna learn how to use weapons. I've been advised to take FMA (Filipino martial arts).

I'm an expert with my umbrella :)

I specially bought a strong steel one with a hard, pointy ferrule. I can spin it around fast in either had or both, from side to side and above my head. And throw it like a spear, making it stab into a target, the ground, whatever…

Well, it's fun to play with like that when I board waiting for the train. :P

lol!
Love seeing that guy going at the punching bag like mad with it :)

I could probably break a watermelon with mine or beat a person with it like that, but I wouldn't stand on it… That's a pretty strong umbrella!

For one of my old wooden ones, when the shaft broke I though about replacing that with a solid steel rod… But thought it's be too much messing around and make a very heavy umbrella. -_-

But then I heard on the news that someone killed a man with his umbrella by stabbing it through his head, so ordinary umbrellas are pretty deadly anyway :(

Then there was that Bulgarian with the poisoned tip on his.

Mostly thought, it keeps the rain off! :)

Firearms (Q on 9mm, and tank weapons, familarized with M16, M3A1 submachinegun, M60 MG among others), tank gunnery (evaluator too), various period weapons drills. Among my favorites is pike and 18-19th Century cannon. I love playing with 18-19th Century muskets too.

A little Stage fighting. Hitting and reacting without actually touching and making it believable is fun.

I practiced Uechi-Ryu when I was younger. I'd actually like to again but there are no opportunities to do so near by.

The Shaolin 5 Animal Styles looks interesting.
Meditation on Nature I personallly find extremely rewarding.
I like to practice the little-known 6th Animal Style… The Way Of The Opossum.

I doubt that my Totes collapsing briefcase umbrella would be any good except as a small club.

Though I am quite good with my cane. (no sword therein I promise) ;)

Kenshuryu Kenpo (OLD Chinese style), San Soo Kung Fu, Wa Lum Kung Fu (mix of Shaolin Mantis Fist and Iron Fist), a bit of Kendo and Iado, and PPCT. The last only because it's required by policy.

You may have been watching too many wong fei hung movies…

Does anyone have any idea why Japanese martial arts dojos are so prominent while Chinese (while widely considered as having superior martial arts) are such a minority?

I always thought that was kinda weird

Because Chinese dojos are inferior.

1. Less quality control. More snake oil con men.
2. Less practical application.
3. Less objective/uniform method of advancement.

The Jpnese took all the flowery stuff, distilled it to useful applicable things, and turned that into teachable systems, and then supplanted the original which had become stagnant. It's like what they did with cars.

mlai, what do you say about ninjutsu (as well as aikido) being called "bullshido" in places like bullshido.net, sherdog, subfighter, etc?

"Bullshido is a derogatory term used by some English-speaking martial arts aficionados to describe fraudulent, deceptive, or inept martial arts teaching.[1][2] It is a portmanteau of bullshit and bushido, the samurai code of honor. Bullshido is considered to be the antithesis of bushido, and is generally applied to martial arts schools where their instructors publish pseudoscientific claims or unverifiable assertions concerning their lineage or training methods, or emphasize blatant commercialism over substance in teaching, training, personal conduct, or business dealings."

I'd say bull fu is worse and more prevalent than bullshido.

Is that why the Gracies got their egos grounded up and handed back to them in the UFC fights?
